Craig Melvin, well-known as a co-host on the TODAY show, is stepping into a new role this spring — that of children’s book author. His first book for kids, titled I’m Proud of You, is set for release on May 7, and there’s one person who might be even more thrilled than Craig himself: his 10-year-old son, Delano. In a heartwarming moment during an interview about the book, Delano took the opportunity to ask his father a thoughtful question. “What made you write the book I’m Proud of You?” he asked. Craig began his response by saying, “What made me write the book? I wanted …” But before he could finish, Delano, with the candid charm only a 10-year-old can pull off, interrupted with his own guess: “… to show me that you were proud of me?” Craig, along with his wife — Emmy-winning sports broadcaster Lindsay Czarniak — shares two children: Delano and their 7-year-old daughter, Sybil. It’s clear that the book is not just a professional milestone, but also a personal love letter to fatherhood.

“That was part of it,” Craig said. “I wanted to write a book that celebrated fatherhood. That celebrated you. That celebrated your sister. That celebrated, like, just being a parent. And I wanted to write something that you would enjoy.”
He also wanted his kids to know that he’s proud of them, not just for the big things. He’s “proud of the little stuff, too.”
“I remember when you tied your shoes the first time. I remember when you made your first basket. I wanted to write something that celebrated the small things,” Craig said.
“When I was born, how did your life change?” Delano asked.
