EastEnders star Shona McGarty has shared a career update, following her exit from the soap.
The actor, who played Whitney Dean for 16 years, left Walford in 2024 in order to explore other opportunities.
Whitney’s final storyline saw her moving to Wakefield with adoptive daughter Britney and baby Dolly, when she learned that her fiancé Zack Hudson had cheated on her ahead of their wedding day.
She also cut ties with her stepmum Bianca Jackson, after realising that Bianca knew about the fling.
Since her exit, Whitney has been mentioned several times on the soap, as she and Zack try to co-parent their daughter. Meanwhile, McGarty has been providing fans with updates on her own life beyond the Square.

In a recent Instagram post, the star revealed that she has been recording new music with Steve Anderson, a producer and musical director who has worked with Kylie Minogue, Westlife and Steps.
“The two most special days in the studio with @mrsteveanderson laying down a couple of tracks! It felt so good getting back behind the mic and dusting off the ol’vocals again,” she wrote.
The post featured a picture of McGarty wearing headphones and singing into a mic, in a recording studio. A soundless video showed her giggling while she appeared to listen back to her new song.

“Excited to share with you what we created…all in due time,” she added, alongside a wink face emoji.
The star’s new venture won’t come as a surprise to avid EastEnders fans, as McGarty has previously showcased her singing on the show. In 2021, Whitney’s vocal talent piqued the interest of Rocky Cotton, who tried to connect her to his music manager friend.
Elsewhere, McGarty has performed on Children in Need in the past, and appeared on the charity Christmas single ‘Rock With Rudolph’ to raise money for the Great Ormond Street Hospital.
