EXCLUSIVE: See José Andrés’ best behind-the-scenes mentorship moments on ‘Yes, Chef’

José Andrés is full of great advice.

On “Yes, Chef!” Andrés teams up with Martha Stewart to put 12 professional chefs with big egos to task, to tame their most problematic behaviors though cooking challenges as well their ability to work as a team.

As evidenced in an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip from the reality competition series, the chef, restaurateur and humanitarian calls the competition a “chance to transform” for the contestants and is quick to offer guidance when it’s needed.

“We have the power to feed the many physically with food, but spirituality plays a role,” Andres says, explaining that he gets this calling to serve others from his parents, who were both nurses. “We need to remember we always have people next to us that can help us become the best version of ourselves.”

“Yes, chef,” contestant Emily Brubaker replies.

Brubaker, the executive chef at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California, tends to become impatient and stubborn with her staff. This is something she’s working through on the show.

“I don’t see you as a stubborn chef,” Andrés says.

“I am, but I’m definitely holding that back,” she replies.

“Sometimes, this is in our DNA, but that’s why sometimes it’s good to still look at yourself in the mirror,” Andrés says as folks nod in understanding.

In another moment, 23-year-old private chef Peter Richardson, a contestant with an admittedly short fuse, is emotional — which Andrés picks up on. The young chef says he’s angry at himself because he wants to do better.

“Things are not going to go as you plan,” Andrés tells him. “You have so much more to learn and to give to yourself and to the world. Learn from it.”

“I believe in myself,” Richardson replies as Andrés gives him a hug. “Thank you, chef.”

Chef Torrece Gregoire, who goes by Chef T, hopes to become a more effective communicator. Owner and chef at Union 41 in Bristol, Virginia, the reality-show veteran says her temper leads to issues in the kitchen.

“I am, like, a little overbearing in the kitchen,” Gregoire says.

Andrés says it’s because she’s looking for “perfection,” but that he’s already seen improvement in her.

“I’m still working on myself,” she says.

“We all are, Chef T,” Andres responds.
