Today Show host Craig Melvin has made some major changes to his career over the past few months.
The popular presenter has been co-anchoring with Savannah Guthrie since January, when he replaced Hoda Kotb. As well as being a TV journalist Craig, 45, juggles being a husband and a father with his wife Lindsay Czarniak and their two children.
Now he’s set to take on another role by becoming a columnist for Southern Living magazine. His offering in the publication will be titled Mr. Southern Living, and will make its debut in the June/July issue. Speaking on Today he teased: “In my house you had EBONY, the Holy Bible, and you had Southern Living — that was it.”
Craig Melvin ‘replaced’ as he takes extended break from Today Show
A press release about his latest career move detailed how the column will see him discuss his favorite memories of growing up in the American south, and what traditions from his upbringing he wants to continue with his own family.

The memories range from “from crabbing and beach days on Hilton Head Island to Sunday dinners in his Connecticut home with wife and two kids,” and the release promised “personal stories, his timeless beach playlist, and what a true Southern summer means to him: bourbon, being on the water, and most importantly, family.”
Craig admitted to the publication one southern tradition his family already loves is big meals. He said: “Here [in Connecticut, where I live now], there are foods that are designated for special occasions.
“If it’s a celebratory meal, maybe you’ll have fried whatever and collard greens or black-eyed peas and white rice. For us growing up, sometimes that was a random Wednesday. You don’t fully appreciate that until you move out of the South.”

He also divulged how he and his children, Delano and Sybil, and wife Lyndsay eat together as a family. He said: “We do Sunday dinner in this little booth in our basement. If it’s a good Sunday, the kids are getting along and we can reflect on the week that was and look forward to the one ahead.”
Craig admitted that others do find one aspect of his southernness a little frustrating. He explained: “I still talk about as slow as I did growing up in Columbia, much to the dismay of many a network producer. I’m in no hurry to finish a sentence.”
Craig has previously told the magazine how the family enjoy tripping to Hilton Head Island in South Carolina.
He said: “In addition to crabbing, my kids go seashell hunting…which turns into me having to put four ziplock bags filled with shells in my suitcase to take them back to Connecticut.
“If you’re not doing it with family, you’re wasting a week. It’s all about making good memories.”
