GB News star ISSUES URGENT warning after ‘TERRIFYING’ Breaking News
GB News viewers were issued an urgent tsunami warning after an 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit Russia on Wednesday.
Official evacuation orders have been handed down to those on both the Pacific coast of Japan and in Hawaii, with the US state already hit by huge waves, each 12 minutes apart.
Warnings are now in place across the entirety of the US west coast, along with Japan’s east coast following the powerful quake which remains one of the largest in recent years.
GB News presenters Christopher Hope and Ellie Costello have been updating viewers throughout the programme, with Hope branding the “breaking news” announcement as “terrifying” for those impacted.
The duo spoke to meteorologist Nathan Rao, who warned people who were travelling to the affected locations to check with their airline and the Foreign Office. He also urged those with family members or loved ones in the area to monitor local advisories and stay in touch.
Rao told GB News viewers: “If you’re travelling there, I would check with your travel advisors. Always seek advice if you’re travelling to areas where there have been natural disasters. Check with your provider and check with the Foreign Office.”
The meteorologist insisted these particular regions are “very very well prepared” for earthquakes, meaning they will have advisories and mechanisms in place to guide people as to what to do in that area.
He continued: “I would keep an eye on what’s going on there. It doesn’t as yet appear, from what I have seen, to have had as huge an impact across that whole region as feared.
“The advice would be don’t panic. Keep an eye on the advisories, check with your travel provider if you are going within that region and check the Foreign Office.”
This is the largest earthquake to hit since 2011, when a 9.1 megaquake hit northeast Japan and left 19,747 people either d3ad or missing. More than 1.9million people in Japan have been told to evacuate their homes.
Meanwhile, the US’ National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said it had recorded waves of nearly six feet hitting Maui, Hawaii.
It comes after the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency warned: “It’s not over yet: Initial wave impacts from the leading edge of the tsunami measured several feet at some monitoring stations, but “follow-up” waves over the next several hours often are LARGER. Don’t return to evacuated areas until the Tsunami Warning is officially lifted.”
