Hoda Kotb Opens Up About Daughter Hope’s Health Battle: “She’s Teaching Me Strength”
It’s the kind of moment that makes even the most seasoned TV anchors falter. Hoda Kotb, the ever-optimistic co-anchor of NBC’s “Today,” has always been the one to bring hope and light into America’s living rooms each morning. But this spring, she found herself clinging to hope in a much more personal way—at her 3-year-old daughter’s hospital bedside.
In a candid conversation with Southern Living Magazine editor-in-chief Sid Evans for the “Biscuits & Jam” podcast, Hoda opened up about the terrifying ordeal her family faced just weeks ago. With her trademark candor, she revealed, “My daughters are strong women already. You know, my daughter Hope had a health scare, but she’s getting better. I think I didn’t realize how much is already in you when it comes to your strength.”
For Hoda, always the rock for her viewers and friends, the experience of feeling helpless as a parent was both humbling and profoundly moving. “To watch her go through a difficult time at just 3 years old is really tough for any parent because you’re helpless. But I think you realize just how incredibly resilient and strong she is. She’s teaching me, which is so funny.”
The usually bubbly anchor’s absence from “Today” last month did not go unnoticed. Viewers wondered and worried as she missed several shows, with co-host Craig Melvin explaining on March 1 that Hoda was dealing with a “family health matter.” When she returned on March 6, Hoda’s relief and gratitude were palpable as she shared the truth: her youngest daughter, Hope, had been hospitalized in the intensive care unit for several days, and spent more than a week in the hospital.
“I’m so grateful she’s home,” Hoda said, her voice thick with emotion. “She is back home. I was waiting for that day to come, and we are watching her closely. I’m just so happy.”
The days in the hospital were long, filled with uncertainty and fear, but also with moments of awe at her daughter’s resilience. “You think you’re supposed to be the one teaching your kids about strength,” Hoda admitted, “but sometimes, they’re the ones teaching you.”
Following Hope’s return home, Hoda made the most of every moment, whisking her daughters—Hope and 6-year-old Haley, whom she shares with ex-fiancé Joel Schiffman—away on a special vacation. After weeks of worry, it was a chance to simply be together, to heal, and to celebrate the small joys of everyday life.
For Hoda, the ordeal has changed her, deepening her appreciation for the strength that lives within each of us—sometimes revealed only in the hardest of times. It’s a lesson she’s grateful for, and one she’ll carry with her, on and off the air.
As she told Sid Evans, “I don’t have to worry much about passing my strength down to my children. They already have it. Hope has shown me that.”
And for millions of viewers who’ve found comfort in Hoda’s warmth and honesty over the years, her story is a reminder: even in the darkest moments, hope endures—and sometimes, it’s the littlest ones who show us how to hold on.
