Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are looking to make history and accomplish a feat never done before by winning a third successive Super Bowl, with their journey beginning against the Texans on Saturday
Patrick Mahomes changed his profile photo on Instagram to show off his Super Bowl rings as the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs begin their quest for a three-peat.
Mahomes, whose wife Brittany gave birth to their third child on Monday, is looking to hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the fourth time in his career. He first won the Super Bowl back in February 2020, defeating the San Francisco 49ers to get off the mark and establish the Chiefs as a perennial threat.
After losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV and the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship a year later, Mahomes and co. returned to the big game and defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in a high-scoring thriller. Then, in February of this year at Allegiant Stadium, outlasted the 49ers once again, winning the second Super Bowl to ever go to overtime.
With their win over the 49ers, Mahomes and the Chiefs became the first back-to-back Super Bowl champions since Tom Brady’s 2004-2005 New England Patriots. The AFC West franchise is now looking to make history by accomplishing the first-ever three-peat.
It’s clear that the 29-year-old is locked in and focused on the task at hand. Ahead of the Chiefs taking to the field for the first time this postseason, Mahomes showed his fans what he’s targetting – while also reminding them of his greatness – by changing his Instagram photo to one of his hand adorned in his three Super Bowl rings.
Back on Christmas Day, the Chiefs dominated the Pittsburgh Steelers in a 29-10 victory that clinched the franchise the No. 1 seed in the AFC, while weeks before they wrapped up the team’s ninth consecutive AFC West title. The victory means the Chiefs secured home-field advantage through the postseason, and the reigning back-to-back champions used the earned time off to reset and focus on making NFL history.

With the AFC path to Super Bowl LIX running through Arrowhead Stadium, the Chiefs were able to rest their starters for the Week 18 trip to Denver before enjoying a bye during Super Wild Card weekend. Kansas City is likely to feel refreshed against the Houston Texans, with Mahomes able to fully rest and leave fears of a high ankle sprain a distant memory.
Now, the Texans are the only thing that stands in the way of the Chiefs reaching yet another AFC Championship. It would be the franchise’s seventh successive AFC title game; the Chiefs have reached the game in each year Mahomes has started, winning four.
The Chiefs host the Texans at Arrowhead Stadium in the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs on Saturday, Jan. 18.
