Martin Kemp has opened up about his “frustrating” health battle and how it has impacted his life and career. The 63-year-old has been experiencing mild hearing loss due to his extensive career as a DJ, which has taken its toll on his everyday life and work. The musician has now teamed up with Nuance Audio to raise awareness of the condition in midlife. As traditional hearing aids often act as a barrier for those experiencing hearing problems, the company has recently launched Nuance Audio Glasses to help people who suffer with mild to moderate hearing loss.

Nuance Audio Glasses are an open-ear hearing solution seamlessly integrated into stylish glasses. After experiencing a number of issues in his everyday life, Martin explained how the glasses have helped him reconnect with his work and stopped him from feeling isolated. He said: “Being a DJ, my passion for music meant years of being surrounded by loud sounds, and that inevitably took a toll on my hearing. I know firsthand the frustration and even isolation that mild hearing loss can bring. There were moments I’d miss parts of conversations, which was frustrating.”

Detailing the benefits of the product, Martin continued: “What truly attracted me to Nuance Audio Glasses is how seamlessly they blend into everyday life. They look and feel like regular, stylish glasses, yet they offer incredible hearing support.
“It’s about breaking down the barriers to hearing loss, empowering people to confidently engage in conversations and enjoy all the sounds of life without feeling self-conscious. It’s like a whole new world has opened up – I’m picking up on nuances I hadn’t heard in ages.”
The Spandau Ballet revealed how the glasses have “transformed” his life, adding: “These glasses have truly helped me stay connected and confident, whether I’m at a family gathering, a busy event, or simply enjoying the quiet moments at home. It’s truly transformative.”
Mild hearing loss is not the only health issue Martin has faced in his life. After being diagnosed with two brain tumours in the 90s, the former EastEnders actor had two metal plates inserted into his head.
Following the surgery, Martin struggled to use one of his legs and had issues with one of his eyes. He also believes the surgery caused his dyslexia.
Addressing this on his podcast FFS! My Dad Is Martin Kemp, which he co-hosts with son Roman Kemp, he confessed: “I am completely dyslexic. I struggle to read, terribly.”
He went on to explain how the condition affects more than just his ability to read, adding: “But my dyslexia, because it came from a physical thing that happened in my brain, it wasn’t just about what I can read and what I can’t read. It is about me finding my way as well.
“I have dyslexia when it comes to me thinking what street is in front of another street. That all goes back to the brain injury that I had. I can’t help it. That maps app is a saviour to me.”
