When it comes to keeping their kids happy, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos are willing to tell a little white lie … but now the truth is out.
The Live With Kelly and Mark stars were taping the March 6 episode of their ABC daytime series when they were discussing the subject of a “megalodon goldfish” being found in a Pennsylvania waterway. This led the two to share how they had housed a couple of goldfish in their family, all thanks to their youngest son Joaquin winning them at local fairs over the years.
“Our son, who shall remain nameless — Joaquin — had a thing that every time he went to the fair, the first thing he would do is win a goldfish,” Kelly stated in a clip posted on TikTok, per Decider. “So, then I would spend the night carrying a goldfish in the bag. Let me tell you about those carnival goldfish — they are made from some other stuff. And we would bring these goldfish into our lives, and they would live.”

But that wasn’t all Kelly and Mark had to say about the subject. While they acknowledged Joaquin’s love of taking home goldfish to keep as pets, Mark disclosed there were times it wasn’t always the same fish he’d gotten. As he added, the couple would sometimes need to switch out the pet due to them not living as long as Joaquin would’ve hoped — and it seemed like Joaquin never found out about the ploy.
“But a couple of times we had to, swap them out,” Mark noted.
“And then we would replace them with similar fish,” Kelly replied. “I don’t think he ever knew.”
“No, he knows now,” Mark laughed in response.
When fans learned of Kelly and Mark’s secret confession about Joaquin’s pet goldfish, it turned out they weren’t alone in the animal switch-up.
“I think my parents did that too,” one person wrote in the comments. “Haha!!! So relatable,” another agreed. “I did this as a teacher kids never knew,” a different follower added.
Well, now we have to wonder if our parents did something like this too …
