Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning star, Esai Morales, has taken up hosting reins for this year’s National Memorial Day Concert after longtime presenter Joe Mantegna withdrew from the annual show.

Capital Concerts initially announced May 20 that Mantegna would return for his 20th year hosting the prestigious Washington ceremony alongside regular co-host Gary Sinise. The Tony award-winner has anchored the broadcast since 2006.

Organizers issued a follow-up statement on May 22, revealing Morales would “step in” for the Criminal Minds veteran without providing details about the last-minute substitution. “This concert is a powerful reminder of what Memorial Day truly represents,” Mantegna said in the original announcement. “It offers comfort, connection, and community for families who have lost loved ones in service to our country, honoring their sacrifice with the dignity and gratitude they deserve.”

Sinise, who continues as co-host, emphasized their shared mission in his earlier statement. “Joe and I are honored to host this annual tribute to our American heroes, past and present, that salutes the courage and commitment of those who have served and those who continue to serve. The freedoms we enjoy are made possible by the brave men and women who wear the uniform.”

Joe Mantegna is now 77 years old.
The 36th annual ceremony features an expanded celebrity lineup beyond the hosting changes.

Robert Patrick is set to present a segment commemorating the 80th anniversary of World War II’s conclusion, while Gretchen Mol leads the Gold Star Families tribute and Blair Underwood honors Vietnam War Dustoff Crews.

On Instagram, Joe Mantegna shared a health update that read: “Though I’m grounded and can’t fly this weekend due to an ear issue, my heart is very much with my dear friends @esai_morales and @garysiniseofficial as they lead this year’s Memorial Day concert to honor our fallen heroes.”

He continued: “I’m especially grateful to @esai_morales for stepping in on my behalf to help carry forward this tribute. Your leadership and heart mean so much, not just to me, but to all who understand the true meaning of this day.”

Joe concluded the post: “Wishing you both a powerful, successful event that brings honor to those we remember and comfort to those who carry their legacy. I’ll be cheering you on from afar. See you next year.”

Musical performances are set to showcase Mary McCormack, Loren Allred, Scotty Hasting, Yolanda Adams and Angel Blue, accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra under conductor Jack Everly’s direction.

The live broadcast aired Sunday, May 25, from 8-9 p.m. ET on PBS, reaching military personnel worldwide through the Armed Forces Network.
