Radio legend Leighton Archer has died at the age of 50 following a stroke. His death was announced on Thursday this week by Jocks’ Journal – a radio publication – on social media. The Australian radio veteran enjoyed a career spanning over three decades, and he was one of the first volunteer announcers at Port Stephens FM in Nelson Bay. The statement by Jock’s Journal read: “Sad news regarding the passing of Leighton Archer. He was just 50 years old. For many years he was a PD and announcer with 2CA. The funeral service for Leighton will be held on Friday, 14th November at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium, North Chapel.”
Leighton went on to lead the Breakfast slot on 2CA in Canberra, before serving as the station’s program director. He also previously worked at Australian Traffic Network and at regional stations, including 2MO.
Many fans and listeners have left heartbroken tributes after hearing the news of Leighton’s death. One person typed on Facebook: “My head has been spinning since reading this. Leighton was one of those genuinely nice guys and a pleasure to work with. Sending love to his family and all who knew him.”
A second also commented: “I worked with Leighton in Gunnedah. Good broadcaster and terrific fella. Feeling very sad reading this.” A third simply said: “RIP.”
On Thursday, his funeral was attended by many of Australia’s most well-known radio stars, including Sydney presenter Trevor Sinclair.

Aussie radio presenter Leon Byner then died on Tuesday, aged 77, and he enjoyed a radio career that lasted over six decades. He died following a battle with acute leukaemia.
