GB News viewers reached to Chancellor Rachel Reeves reading her Budget so late in the year, as they wrote in on Wednesday (November 26) to express their outrage. Show host, Eamonn Holmes, kicked off the segment by sharing furious viewer messages, with some demanding “a very loud protest outside Parliament” during Reeves’ speech and insisting she “shouldn’t read the rest of it.” One viewer, Zintar, even called on farmers to block the M25 with tractors, adding, “The French would”. Another particularly brutal message read: “Today the Christmas Grinch really makes its move.”

Holmes appeared to agree with the Dr Seuss character comparison as he later questioned if Reeves would really turn out to be “The Grinch” While handing over to Shadow Chief Secretary Richard Fuller, who was positioned outside Parliament and said the Chancellor will be facing “a choice between appeasing Labour MPs or focusing on the British public.”

Fuller didn’t push back on the Grinch comparison either, telling GB News the Chancellor had broken last year’s promises and left the country in “a very difficult situation.” The Budget read today has already faced mass criticism after it was leaked this morning and revealed a £26bn worth of tax hikes, including a mansion tax.

The document confirmed that the Chancellor will extend the existing freezes on personal tax thresholds for another three years, until 2030-31 and that she has officially scrapped the limit that restricts child tax credit and universal credit to the first two children in most households.

“There are many reasons why people choose to have children, then find themselves in difficult times. I don’t believe children should have to bare the brunt of this,” she shared.

Reeves has also announced a 2% point increase in tax rates on property and savings income. The Chancellor told MPs that a landlord with an income of £25,000 currently pays more than £1,000 less in tax than a tenant with the same salary.

Not only this, but there will also be a tax raid on salary sacrifice schemes, commonly used in pension schemes, which has been announced. Salary sacrifice schemes allow people to “give up” a chunk of their salary for a different benefit from their employer.

Reeves said she is introducing a £2,000 cap on such contributions, and the changes will take effect in 2029, leaving many workers furious.
