Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin have been criticized on social media after the Today Show forgot to mention one of the winners at the 97th Academy Awards.
A person watching the NBC morning TV show accused the hosts of ignoring I’m Still Here, a historical drama about a widow’s search for her missing husband, Rubens Paiva, a former lawmaker kidnapped by military agents in 1971. The movie, starring Fernanda Torres as lawyer Eunice Paiva, won an Oscar as Best International Feature Film.
I’m Still Here was the first Brazilian film to be nominated and win the award. Directed by Walter Salles, the film had to overcome a line-up including Danish true-crime story of The Girl With the Needle, Iran-set legal drama The Seed of the Sacred Fig and musical Emilia Pérez, which had been the hot favorite for the award.
But a viewer has called out the Today Show for seemingly forgetting to mention the film in their post-Oscar coverage. They wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter), “Did the @TODAYshow simply ignore ‘I’m Still Here’? What the F???? It’s embarrassing the arrogance…”

While accepting the award on Sunday (March 2), director Walter said, “This goes to a woman who, after a loss suffered during an authoritarian regime, decided not to bend and to resist. Her name is Eunice Paiva.”
He also dedicated the film to “the two extraordinary women who gave life to [Eunice Paiva]. Fernanda Torres and Fernanda Montenegro.” The movie director was previously nominated in the same category for his 1998 drama Central Station, but was passed over in favor of Italian Holocaust comedy Life Is Beautiful.
Before the Oscars, I’m Still Here won a string of awards, including a gong for best screenplay at the Venice film festival and the audience award at Rotterdam. But the impact of I’m Still Here has extended beyond cinema, as the film has sparked national debates about Brazil’s amnesty law, which shielded perpetrators of dictatorship-era crimes from punishment.
The country’s Supreme Court even reopened the case of Rubens Paiva’s disappearance following the film’s popularity. The Brazilian filmmaker said that while the film was intended to look back and understand his country’s history, it took on an added significance given the rise of far-right politics, especially during the presidency of Jail Bolsonaro.
