Savannah Guthrie recently admitted there are times when she still gets nervous in interviews, despite her over 10 years of hosting the Today Show.
The 53-year-old journalist has been on a press tour for her new children’s book, ‘Mostly What God Does is Love You.’ It is the follow up to her first picture book, ‘Mostly What God Does,’ which came out last year.
She joined the Today Show in 2012 after longtime anchor Ann Curry left. When she first learned about getting the gig, she admitted she was initially “terrified,” but the host has since become a beloved part of the morning show.
She chatted with Us Weekly about her long tenure on the show. Though she doesn’t get anxious before the day-to-day show anymore, she does still get nervous for the “big interview.”
Guthrie said: “I do get anxious about big interviews. If I have a really big one, my husband’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, steer clear.’ He’s sliding food under the door and I’ve got all my papers laid out.”
One specific guest that made her feel that way was Microsoft co-founder and billionaire Bill Gates. She said they wanted to make sure they used their time wisely to get the best interview.
“There’s just a lot you could talk to him about, and we only have seven minutes. You don’t know what you’re going to get. You can have your plan, and then [it] runs right into a real human being,” she added.
That interview aired three weeks ago, where they discussed his new book ‘Source Code’, as well as his relationship with President Donald Trump and fellow billionaire Elon Musk. She did ask some difficult questions, including how he feels about Musk’s overreaching power in the White House after recently calling his dealings with far-right politicians overseas “insane s–t”.
Gates responded with a telling answer, saying: “Well, I admire the great private sector stuff he’s done — you know, SpaceX, Tesla, both amazing companies. I think in the case of USAID, he doesn’t appreciate the phenomenal work that goes on. It’s not partisan work.”
Guthrie is still on her book tour, making the final stop in New York City on Thursday.
