President Donald Trump has agreed to revive a popular Super Bowl addition that was declined by Joe Biden in each of the previous two years.
Per Hanna Panreck of Fox News, Donald Trump has agreed to an interview with the network’s chief political anchor, Bret Baier, ahead of Super Bowl 59 on Sunday. The interview will be pre-taped and air around 3:00 p.m. EST, Panreck added.
Super Bowl 59 between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles is slated for 6:30 p.m. EST at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Since 2009, the network that broadcasts the Super Bowl (Fox, NBC or CBS) usually conducts a pre-taped interview with the President of the United States that airs before kickoff. Joe Biden did it in 2021 (Super Bowl 55) and 2022 (Super Bowl 56) but turned down the invitations in each of the last two years.
Donald Trump declined NBC’s offer for a pre-Super Bowl interview in 2018, ahead of the big game between the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots. Trump subsequently canceled the Eagles’ White House invitation following their victory, citing the disagreement the two sides had on standing for the National Anthem before games.
Trump defeated Kamala Harris in the 2024 United States presidential election, becoming just the second POTUS to serve two non-consecutive terms, joining Grover Cleveland.
Donald Trump Has A Complicated Relationship With The NFL
To say that President Trump’s relationship with the NFL is complex would be a giant understatement. He has received donations from several NFL owners, including Jerry Jones, Shad Khan, Woody Johnson, Jimmy Haslam and Robert Kraft.
But the 78-year-old Trump has also been vocal about the performance of Commissioner Roger Goodell, and infamously called for the league to “fire” players who wouldn’t stand for the National Anthem. Additionally, multiple players on Super Bowl-winning teams have declined Trump’s White House invitation.
