Veteran broadcaster and journalist Sandy Gall has passed away at his home, his family has confirmed.

In a heartfelt tribute, they said: “His was a great life, generously and courageously lived.”

He was one of the country’s most familiar faces, first as a foreign correspondent for ITN and later as a co-presenter of News at Ten.

The former presenter began his illustrious career in 1952, joining the Aberdeen Press and Journal.

Sandy remained a prominent journalist for an impressive 50 years, working at Reuters as a foreign correspondent before joining ITN in 1963.

His time at ITN made him a household name in the UK, where he remained until his retirement in 1992.

The renowned journalist’s first assignment was in Texas, just hours after President Kennedy was assassinated.

Sandy was also one of the few journalists to remain in Vietnam to cover the fall of Saigon after the North Vietnamese claimed victory in 1975.

The legendary broadcaster co-presented News at Ten in 1970, then the UK’s most-watched news programme.

His last appearance on the programme was in 1991, but he returned as a special reporter for one more year before finally retiring.

After retiring, Sandy founded and ran the Afghanistan Appeal for nearly 40 years.
