Sir David and Lady Beckham wished their son a happy birthday on Instagram, two months after the 27-year-old exposed a rift in the family. In a statement in January, Brooklyn Peltz Beckham made several accusations against his parents, including that they had tried to “ruin” his relationship with his wife Nicola. His parents have not commented on the rift, but both posted photos and birthday wishes to their son.

Victoria, 51, may face another dilemma as Brooklyn, 27, did not publicly respond to his parents birthday wishes which suggests “something deeper is happening”, according to Olivia Bennett, Digital PR Director at Go Up.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, the crisis management expert explained, “Silence can be a strategy, but it’s rarely neutral,” she explained. “When one side speaks, and the other doesn’t, the absence of response becomes part of the story. Audiences begin interpreting that silence — sometimes as restraint, sometimes as confirmation that something deeper is happening.”

“That’s the real dilemma,” Olivia says. “Responding risks escalating the story and turning a private family issue into a public dispute. But silence can allow speculation to grow unchecked. For families with a brand as visible as the Beckhams, even small signals can move headlines.”

She adds: “The safest approach is usually to avoid confrontation while continuing normal public activity. It reassures audiences that life and relationships are continuing, without feeding the conflict.”

The Beckhams have been embroiled in a feud with their eldest son and his wife since their wedding in 2022, with tensions reaching boiling point this year.

In Brooklyn’s bombshell six-page statement he slammed his parents, in which he claimed, . “The performative social media posts, family events and inauthentic relationships have been a fixture of the life I was born into,” he wrote, before going on to claim, “Family love is decided by how much you post on social media.”

Olivia said, “In many ways, social media is vital for celebrity careers, but it has also become a stage for public diplomacy within families. A birthday message, a tagged photo or even an absence of engagement can signal reconciliation, loyalty or division. Personal relationships are now analysed by audiences almost like political messaging.”

She concludes: “The challenge for high-profile families like the Beckhams is that their brand has always been built on unity. When cracks appear publicly, even small gestures carry disproportionate weight. Managing that narrative now requires the same care as managing a corporate reputation.”

Recent reports have since claimed by Victoria publicly posting her estranged son on his milestone birthday may have been a step too far amid the ongoing family tensions.

However, a family reunion could be on the horizon, according to the reputational expert.

“Ultimately, we can’t forget that this is a family, and it’s natural that Victoria would want to wish her son a happy birthday,” Olivia says. “But the fact that the message is shared publicly does send a wider signal. It suggests that she [and by extension David] are keeping the door open and signalling goodwill.”

“These kinds of gestures allow someone to acknowledge the relationship without addressing the conflict directly. It signals warmth without forcing a public resolution. From a reputation perspective, it’s a way of showing that the relationship still matters.”

She added: “These gestures carry weight because audiences read them symbolically. A simple post can suggest reconciliation, tension or distance depending on what’s said (or what’s left unsaid).”
