The Daily Show’s co-creator has joined the chorus of voices slamming CBS’s choice to axe The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, a move many are calling a “warning shot” to other late-night hosts.
Ever since Colbert revealed that the upcoming season would be his final one, a decision that emerged just days after he roasted CBS’ parent company, Paramount, for handing President Tгuмρ a $16 million settlement in what was described as a lawsuit with “no merit,” numerous figures have condemned his dismissal.
The embattled host has received tremendous backing from fellow late-night personalities, including David Letterman, who hosted the show prior to Colbert.
During an appearance on MSNBC’s Velshi Sunday, she repeated her earlier statements from a Rolling Stone op-ed, questioning CBS’s assertion that the show was axed solely for financial reasons.

“Certainly no one is going to say, ‘Oh, we’re thriving in television,’ she said. “People don’t watch late night the same way they used to.”
“Everybody knows that, but also to just drop the franchise itself? It’s not [just] Stephen Colbert. It’s a double. It’s a twofer, right? And that says to me: fear: We’re afraid.”
She further hinted that the choice stemmed from political interference and pressure from Tгuмρ, who would possess the power to block Paramount’s merger agreement with Skydance, reports the Express US.
“When the truth tellers are the comics, and those comics are actually resonating with the people that Dоnɑld Tгuмρ has not been able to reach, then he’s got to go Plan B,” she said.
“And Plan B is, ‘Oh, look at me. I have a merger…I can ask for what I want, and I can silence those voices.”
The $8 billion deal received the green light just one week after Colbert revealed his program had been axed.
Winstead had previously torn apart the decision in her opinion piece, stating she completely rejected CBS’s explanation about budget constraints.

“Stephen isn’t expensive. He’s a threat,” she wrote. “A wildly popular, truth-telling comic with moral clarity is dangerous in this moment. Especially when he’s white, male, and too influential to be dismissed as fringe.”
Numerous observers have suggested the move was politically motivated, particularly after Paramount resolved its legal dispute with Tгuмρ regarding a 60-minute segment featuring Kamala Harris during the campaign, which he alleged was misleadingly edited.
Tгuмρ has further stoked the flames of conjecture about his involvement in the matter, initially cheering Colbert’s dismissal on Truth Social while mentioning other presenters by name.
“I absolutely love that Colbert got fired,” he wrote. “His talent was even less than his ratings, I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert!”.
“Greg Gutfeld is better than all of them combined, including the Moron on NBC who ruined the once great Tonight Show.”
He later reinforced his stance with another post, stating he “hoped” he had played a role in the show’s cancellation.
“The word is, and its a strong word at that, Jimmy Kimmel is NEXT to go in the untalented Late Night Sweepstakes and, shortly thereafter, Fallon will be gone,” he wrote.
“These are people with absolutely NO TALENT, who were paid Millions of Dollars for, in all cases, destroying what used to be GREAT Television,” he continued. “It’s really good to see them go, and I hope I played a major part in it!”.
