Before Christmas, Operation Breakthrough CEO Mary Esselman got a call from Swift’s team.
They informed her that Swift wanted to make the hefty $250,000 donation to the charity.
“Our kids were pretty excited,” she said.
“We asked them if they wanted to do a little thank you, and you could see we had a lot of enthusiastic participants.”
Kids at Operation Breakthrough posted a one-minute video to social media thanking Swift for her gift.
The money Swift sent to the organization is getting split between three of their programs.
First is the workforce development and entrepreneurship program, which has 10 labs for kids to learn trades and industry skills.
Next is the before and after school program that provides child care for families when school is not in learning hours.
Lastly is an early learners program.
“We have 432 students, birth to 5-year-olds who are there every day for early care and education,” Esselman said.
“Our goal is to make sure every child enters school ready.”
Swift likely made such a large donation to Operation Breakthrough due to Kelce’s involvement in the program.
The Kansas City Chiefs tight end visited the campus after Esselman took over at CEO and has been active there ever since.
Esselman thinks Kelce’s involvement could draw Swift to visit the kids at the campus like she did at Kansas City’s children’s hospital.
“Maybe one of these times she’ll pop along with Travis,” Esselman said.
“But we couldn’t be more grateful that she selected us for such a special gift.”
Kelce has been working with Operation Breakthrough since 2015 and sponsors their robotics team called 87 and Running.
He also bought a muffler shop in 2020 for the workforce development and entrepreneurship program.
“He came for Read Across America Day,” Esselman said.
“He was reading to some of the preschool classrooms and he just kept coming back.”
Kelce is so involved with Operation Breakthrough that he was nominated for the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.
