Today’s Dylan Dreyer took to Instagram to share her frustrations over the ongoing egg shortage in the United States, but some fans accused her of ‘adding to the hysteria’
Dylan Dreyer has faced backlash from fans over her recent Instagram post about the ongoing egg shortage in America.
The meteorologist from TODAY posted a picture of her last four eggs in the carton on Tuesday, February 11. She expressed her fear of using them due to the present scarcity. Her Instagram caption read: “The last 4 eggs on earth. I will likely be so scared to use them that they’ll go bad before I do.”
However, some followers took issue with her post and accused her of contributing to the panic. One fan commented: “Wow. Really? Bought some today. Lots there at Trader Joe’s. Quit adding to the hysteria. Next.”
Another follower, who claimed to be a “big fan” of Dylan, slammed the media for exacerbating the shortages, comparing it to the toilet paper shortage at the start of the COVID 19 pandemic.

They argued that the shortage began when those began to hoard. The fan concluded by saying, “The supply chain is sufficient for every one of us to have our 12 to 18 eggs a week for our family of four if that’s all we all buy. Obviously at a much higher price, but there still should be enough for everyone if we didn’t hoard them. And I believe the media attention precipitate the hoarding behavior,” reports the Mirror US.
Despite the two comments, there were individuals who empathised with Dylan and shared similar concerns. Some offered advice on where to find eggs, suggesting places like Trader Joes or local Farmers’ Markets.Others provided tips on how to substitute eggs in recipes.
One fan said: “Agree.. I m also afraid to use my remaining eggs!! Funny I don’t eat eggs!! Just need them for cooking.. I m already thinking of recipes that I don’t need to use eggs!! Just awefull [sic].”
A second fan wrote: “Are there Farmers markets near you or any of your colleagues? ours is stocked every weekend, worth a look!” Another said: “Use an egg replacer – tofu is a good substitute as well.”
One person mentioned that their market has “has had plenty of eggs. More expensive but not outrageous.”
The recent egg shortage is due to an outbreak of avian influenza (HPAI), or bird flu, which has resulted in the death of 150 million birds across all 50 states, as reported by ABC News.
According to the latest data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the disease has led to a rise in the number of affected birds, impacting the cost of eggs due to the shortage. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) predicts that egg prices will further increase by another 20% this year.
