Savannah Gutherie sat down for a chat with Tom Hanks about narrating the new nature docuseries The Americas as the actor continues to be embroiled in controversy by MAGA supporters.
Within the last week, the 68-year-old actor has been hit with fierce backlash online following his controversial Saturday Night Live skit in which he played a problematic Donald Trump supporter. In the skit, the former Forrest Gump star was seen wearing a MAGA hat and refusing to shake a Black man’s hand. After the risky sketch aired, many right-wings fans took to social media expressing their outrage calling the segment “racist” and “disgusting.”
But despite the controversy, Hanks went on to promote his latest project just days later on The Today Show. During the episode that aired on Wednesday, Feb. 19 the legendary star was interviewed by Gutherie as they discussed his upcoming nature series.
Kicking off their discussion, Savannah joked: “Are you aired of me?” To which Hanks sweetly replied: “What’s with this! It’s like oh wow, I get to go to algebra and Savannah’s in my algebra class.” To which she replied: “And sitting with Tom Hanks is always a Master Class – you never know what you might learn.”

Savannah then went on to introduce Hanks’ new project explaining that he is narrating a nature series that explores the extraordinary wildlife of North and South America. Speaking on the remarkable footage featured, Hanks said: “There are times where I cannot believe what I am looking at. There is not a moment of artificiality in it. Nothing has been CGI’d.”
Savannah then asked: “So are you full of facts now?” To which Hanks confirmed and went on to flex some of his newfound knowledge: “Oh I’m the greatest dinner companion there can possibly be. Like this is the first time I heard about the Atmosphere River – it is a body of water that lives above us that travels for thousands and thousands of miles.”
