Coronation Street has been hit with reports of a mass exodus on the ITV soap but the fact there are so many exits should actually have fans excited – not worried, writes Jasmine Allday

Coronation Street has been hit with claims of a cast ‘cull’ as of late.
Multiple stars have been axed or quit the show, leaving some fans worried for what the future might be for the soap. However, fans needn’t worry as soap insiders have confirmed to The Mirror that this is just the start of a new and exciting era for the programme.
Whilst many may be concerned, I think this is a really exciting time for the soap. Kate Brooks has just become the show’s new producer and has teased drama and excitement ahead as she looked forward to 2025.
“There are a few exits this year, and some unexpected ones that will send shockwaves. People might not expect the exits, but there are a few,” she said as she previewed 2025 on the Cobbles.

So far, we’ve heard of big exits from the likes of Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver), Daisy Midgeley (Charlotte Jordan) and Craig Tinker (Colson Smith), but – as sad as it is to see these characters go – I think it only spells good news for fans of the show.
Coronation Street had an incredible 2023, which saw the end of serial killer Stephen Reid in a storyline that captivated millions. For months, we’d be guessing and deliberating amongst us just how Stephen might leave – would he get away with his crimes?
Certainly, no one thought Peter Barlow would be the one to run him over and see to the end of the villain for good. Following that, another villain arrived on the Cobbles (can you tell I love a soap villain?!)
The storyline between Lauren Bolton and Joel Deering was both phenomenal and harrowing – with the soap raising awareness of grooming of young vulnerable people that largely goes under the radar across the UK.

Soaps are for entertainment, of course, but they are also there for raising important issues and reminding us of those things that may not affect us personally every day. Mason’s stabbing storyline is just as important as Lauren’s grooming storyline, as it is for us to see an older woman change her career and follow her new passion of law studies as Evelyn Plummer heads back to university.
Kate Brooks has certainly proved that despite a few less characters, we’ll still be getting the big soap storylines that we have come to appreciate and love Coronation Street for. Having less characters isn’t a bad thing, because the stories they tell are still so important.
Gambling.com’s Entertainment expert, James Leyfield, told us: “It’s tough for soaps nowadays. It will be increasingly difficult for soap operas to survive in a streaming-dominated market, but streamlining the Corrie cast looks to be the right way to go to preserve the British TV staple. The cobbles aren’t being paved over just yet.”
Whoever bids farewell to the Cobbles next, there is one thing we can be sure of – Corrie isn’t going anywhere!
