Fox Contributor Lawrence Jones Sparks Backlash Over Tactical Vest at U.S.-Mexico Border
Fox News contributor Lawrence Jones has drawn intense criticism after appearing on Hannity Wednesday night wearing a t2ctical v3st while reporting from the U.S.-Mexico border. Photos he posted on social media show him standing alongside Border Patrol agents in a v3st bearing a federal badge — despite no visible need for such gear, and other agents in the area seen without it.
Though Jones later claimed he was “required to wear the v3st for safety,” his outfit was widely mocked by journalists, veterans, and wr correspondents who argued it misrepresented the conditions at the border, portraying it as a wr z0ne.
MSNBC correspondent Jacob Soboroff countered sharply: “I’ve never once worn a bulletproof v3st at the border — not even while on a chase with Border Patrol in the Arizona desert in the middle of the night.”
The backlash gained momentum on social media, where critics — including journalist Roland Martin — mocked Jones’ appearance, questioning whether it was meant to raise his profile. Others edited images of Jones wearing Mexican ponchos or cartoon backpacks, highlighting what they viewed as “c0stum3 j0urnal1sm.”
While a few defended Jones, noting that “playing dress-up” is a broader issue in TV news, NBC News producer and Marine veteran Mac William Bishop called it “a non-partisan flaw” and an affront to journalistic standards.
Jones stood firm, reiterating: “Border Patrol made me wear it.” Still, the episode reignited concerns about Fox News’ dramatic framing of the border, a region that continues to be the focus of polarized narratives.
