Diving Injury forces Lara Spencer through Painful Surgeries – GMA Viewers Heartbroken!

What Happened to Lara Spencer? The 'GMA' Star Shares a Major Health Update on Instagram

Lara Spencer, co-host of Good Morning America, has spoken up about her recent double surgery for two different health issues. After disappearing from the television show this week, 55-year-old Spencer has revealed that she’s now healthy and recovering.

On The Road To Recovery

The TV show host shared an image on social media on December 11 showing both feet bandaged and in different types of bracers. Another photo she posted was of Spencer taking a smiley selfie with her surgeon, whom she thanked in the post’s caption.

“My right foot was easy-just had plate removed from surgery last year,” the caption began. “The left is a bigger deal from a very old college diving injury. I was doing a reverse one and a half and hit the board, shattering toes and joints.”

By hitting the board, Spencer meant the diving board of a swimming pool. She used to be a nationally ranked diver for the Penn State swimming and diving team. Spencer achieved this victory while studying broadcast journalism in the College of Communications.

Back when the GMA host was in school, doctors told her they could do nothing besides tape it and let it heal, despite the pain. Now with much better options in healthcare Spencer thanked Dr. Marty O’Malley at HSS for the successful operation.

“These boots were made for walkin,” she quoted from the iconic Nancy Sinatra song.

It didn’t take long for comments to pour in from colleagues wishing her well on her road to recovery. “Wow! Well no doubt you’ll be twirling in no time!” Deborah Roberts wrote, the ABC News 20/20 co-anchor.

“Sweetie!! Feel better soon,” said Rebecca Jarvis, ABC News’ chief business, economics, and technology correspondent.

Spencer has been through hell and back when it comes to her medical journey. In 2023, the co-anchor opened up about her foot operation for a torn plantar plate and ligament. O’Malley had to operate on it, as it was “slowly getting worse and worse.”

Then in 2016, Spencer underwent hip replacement surgery at the age of 47. “It was embarrassing to share, but then I realized there’s nothing to be embarrassed about,” she explained on GMA. “I have a genetic predisposition to this, but if you’re athletic and you move, it’s happening younger and younger.”

Although a single foot surgery is a lot to deal with, a second one at the same time is a tougher battle. It may take a while before Spencer is ready to return on air, but for now, it seems the road to recovery from the double surgery is clear.
