At 51, David, who replaced Diane Sawyer in 2014, just won Outstanding LiVe News Program for the third straight year at the 6th News and Documentary Emmy Awards. Despite internal changes, World News Tonight grew viewership from 7.24 million to 7.308 million, beating NBC Nightly News anchored by former colleague Tom Llamas.

Speaking on LIVE with Kelly and Mark, David shared: “Listen, it’s been a really hea/y time and it hasn’t let up… I’ve joked I should say, ‘Good evening, and I’m sorry’ but we’ll get through.”

The most touching moment: David paused a li/e broadcast to honor Michelle: “I’m still in denial… Shelly cues me every night, standing by the camera. This moment is yours. You deserve this, Shelly. Go back to Kentucky, be with family, horses and the beautiful countryside. 11 years by my side… I don’t know what I’ll do without you.”

The camera cut to Michelle, who signaled David off-air for the last time. Even as ABC faces cost cuts and restructuring, David remained calm, closing: “But we’ll get through.”
