“My family has always meant a lot to me,” Lawrence Jones began, his voice full of emotion. He shared about his journey to trace back beyond Texas, to before his anc3st0rs came to the U.S..
With help from experts and his ancestry test, Lawrence discovered that over 80% of his heritage comes from Africa — regions like Congo, Mali, and Togo — plus a surprising 5% English and 6% Irish. He laughed: “I didn’t expect that!”
The most touching part was learning about his five-times great-grandmother, who was born in Africa, survived the transatlantic tr2de and lived to be 105 years old. “Not many made it through, but she did…” he said, moved. The expert added she lived with her daughter Amanda and son-in-law Marshall, who also had African roots.
Even more inspiring, Lawrence discovered an ancestor who f0ught for just1ce: his four-times great-grandfather, Williams, who registered to vote just two years after freedom came, despite danger. “Even when people got the right, few dared… but he did!” Lawrence said proudly.
He also found out about his maternal roots in Nigeria, an area famous for ancient bronze works. “So I could actually go back and meet them?” he asked, eyes shining.
Lastly, Lawrence learned about his third great-grandfather, Emanuel Lang, who worked at the Majestic Hotel in Texas, known for its healing hot springs. He loved seeing Emanuel’s signature, height, weight, and hair color on old draft cards from World War II.
“I learned so much about my family that I never knew before…” Lawrence concluded, smiling.
