BBC Breakfast presenters discuss couple breaking museum chair

BBC Breakfast hosts have been slammed for laughing at a news story that viewers ‘didn’t think was funny at all’.

The morning show returned to screens on Sunday (June 15) for another instalment. Rachel Burden and Ben Boulos were back at the helm, to discuss some of the biggest stories hitting the headlines.

During the episode, the hosts pair spoke about recent footage that has gone viral of a couple breaking a piece of art at a museum.

“This is footage of a couple who decided to try out a chair, this was a Van Gough style chair covered in crystals inside a museum in Verona,” Rachel said, as CCTV footage played on screen.

A person in the video could then be seen sitting on the chair, only for it to break and bend.

“The man decides he’ll try it out and immediately it collapses,” Rachel said, as Ben could be heard laughing in the background.

The couple ended up making a swift exit from the gallery, as Rachel added: “It’s [the chair] left there, looking I think, not necessarily the worst.” Ben chimed in: “It now tells a story. Art evolves doesn’t it?”

Rachel then explained: “The couple apparently fl3d the museum before staff knew what had happened.”

Ben quipped: “Imagine that moment of h0rror of when it happened; ‘oh dear, we’re in trouble!’”

However, Ben and Rachel’s behaviour while covering the news story didn’t go down well with some viewers.

“I hope they catch the couple from the museum. Also, I don’t understand why #BBCBreakfast are treating it as a laugh and a joke,” fumed one person on X. Someone else added: “I don’t think it’s funny at all but it’s tickled Ben.”

A third chimed in: “Seems to have totally skipped over the fact the guy destroyed a piece of art…he had no right to try it out!”

The art mishap took place at the Palazzo Maffei, in Verona. Museum director Vanessa Carlon previously spoke about the incident and said: “Sometimes we lose our brains to take a picture, and we don’t think about the consequences.

“Of course, it was an accident, but these two people left without speaking to us – that isn’t an accident. This is a nightmare for any museum.”
