Coronation Street star Liam McCheyne has spoken about Mason Radcliffe’s return to the show for the first time.

The young actor’s character Dylan Wilson fears for his safety this week when he learns that Mason has been released from the Young Offenders centre.

Dylan bravely stood up to Mason earlier this year, testifying against him in court.

This helped to secure justice as Mason faced his punishment for threatening Liam Connor with a knife. However, in upcoming episodes, Liam’s mum Maria breaks the news to Dylan that Mason is free after just three months.

Speaking to Digital Spy at the Radio Times Soap Awards, Liam explained: “Mason gets released from Young Offenders. Obviously Dylan is on high alert. He’s very worried for himself, he’s very worried for his dad.

“He’s in a twist [about it], but whether Mason’s going to be a bad lad or he’s going to try and turn it around, who knows? It’s going to be very exciting when he gets out.”

He continued: “All I can say is we really want to focus on the relationship between Dylan and Sean. Where Mason’s going to tie in with that, there’s exciting things to come. Watch this space.”

Liam also reflected on his role in Corrie‘s bullying storyline, which saw Dylan act as Mason’s accomplice while the villain was cruelly targeting their schoolmate Liam Connor.

He told us: “The first word that comes to mind is a privilege, more than anything. I’ve got a very big passion within myself to do something that’s related to young people’s mental health, which we saw with the character of Liam.

“Working with Luca [Toolan, who plays Mason] and Charlie [Wrenshall, who plays Liam] has been absolutely fantastic, and of course Antony [Cotton, who plays Sean] as well – we’re still very close. It’s a privilege.”

The Radio Times Soap Awards took place at the Midland Hotel in Manchester on Saturday evening.

Charlie Wrenshall, who plays Liam, was among the winners on the night as he took home the prize for Best Young Performer. Paul Foreman’s Motor Neurone Disease diagnosis was also named Best Storyline.
