Prince William seems to have disproved a claim once made by Meghan Markle during his first day in Brazil this week. The Prince of Wales, 43, is currently in Brazil for a series of engagements, including his 2025 Earthshot Prize.

One of the engagements the future King took part in yesterday was a football training session with children at the Maracana Stadium in Brazil. Prince William took part in some drills and spent time talking to local children who are part of Terra FC

After showing off his football skills and chatting to the children, aged between eight and 12, William could be seen sharing handshakes and hugs with the youngsters.

This appears to have disproved a claim once made by Meghan Markle in the 2022 Netflix docuseries Harry and Meghan.

This is because Meghan once claimed that William and his wife Princess Kate seemed to find hugging “jarring”. She said: “When Will and Kate came over and I was meeting her for the first time I remember I was in ripped jeans, I was barefoot.

“Like I was a hugger, I have always been a hugger. I didn’t realise that is really jarring for a lot of Brits. I started to understand that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside”.

Prince Harry, William’s estranged brother, also wrote in his 2023 memoir Spare that William, 43, “recoiled” when Meghan hugged him, claiming that the prince wouldn’t normally hug somebody he didn’t know.

However, William’s actions in Brazil seem to prove otherwise, with fans all commenting on this as they share photographs of the prince hugging these children after playing football with them.

One fan wrote on X: “The Royals do NOT find ‘hugs jarring’ from genuinely lovely people. Prince William in Rio.”

Another said: “Look, not ‘jarring’ at all.”

Another fan wrote: “Prince William is truly so caring and kind, especially when it comes to children. The way he takes time to hug each one and make them feel special is just heart-melting.”
