King Charles’ nephew, James, Earl of Wessex, has taken on a surprisingly down-to-earth summer job on the royal estate at Sandringham, reportedly getting behind the wheel of tractors and working alongside estate staff.
The 18-year-old royal has chosen a very different way to spend his summer ahead of receiving his A-level results, trading formal royal appearances for early starts, long hours and the realities of working on one of the monarchy’s most famous rural properties.
James is the younger child of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and has generally maintained a relatively low public profile compared with some of his royal relatives.
Although his family has attended major royal occasions over the years, including Christmas and Easter gatherings, James has not been pushed towards becoming a working member of the Royal Family.
Instead, both of his parents have reportedly allowed their children to decide their own futures.
His older sister, Lady Louise Windsor, has previously made clear that she does not intend to pursue a full-time role as a working royal. James, meanwhile, appears to be taking a similarly independent approach while exploring life outside the spotlight.
According to a report by royal correspondent Matt Wilkinson, James has recently been working as a farmhand on King Charles’ Sandringham estate.
Rather than simply visiting the property as a member of the Royal Family, the teenager is reportedly getting involved in the day-to-day work carried out across the estate.
An estate worker told The Sun that the King is likely to be particularly pleased to see younger members of his family developing an appreciation for rural life.
“The King is known for his fondness of the countryside and he couldn’t be prouder knowing the younger royals share his love,” the worker reportedly said.
James’ decision to take on the role has apparently surprised some people who are accustomed to seeing him dressed formally alongside his parents and other members of the Royal Family.
“Everyone is so used to only seeing James smartly turned out with his family at functions at Christmas and Easter so I had to do a double take,” the estate worker reportedly added.
But away from the cameras and ceremonial occasions, James is said to be perfectly comfortable getting his hands dirty.
“He might be the King’s nephew but he is more than happy to get his hands dirty and muck in,” the source said.
Working on a large estate is very different from the highly structured environment associated with royal engagements.
According to the report, driving tractors around Sandringham is not an easy responsibility and can involve long working days.
For James, however, the experience could provide an important opportunity to learn practical skills and understand the demands of working life.
The estate worker reportedly described the job as valuable in helping the young royal develop a strong work ethic from an early age.
The decision also reflects the more private upbringing James and Louise have received from the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.
Prince Edward and Sophie have generally attempted to give their children as normal a childhood as possible despite their close connection to the monarchy.
James was born in December 2007 and has grown up during a period of considerable change within the Royal Family.
He was originally known as James, Viscount Severn before receiving the title Earl of Wessex following his father’s accession to the Dukedom of Edinburgh.
Despite his royal status, he has rarely sought the same level of public attention as some of his cousins.
His appearances at major family events have generally been limited, although he has increasingly been seen accompanying his parents at important occasions.
His summer job at Sandringham now offers a fascinating glimpse into how the younger generation of royals may be developing their own interests and skills away from official duties.
It also carries particular significance because of King Charles’ longstanding passion for farming, conservation and the countryside.
Sandringham has been closely associated with the Royal Family for generations and remains one of the monarch’s most important private estates.
