Law & Order: Special Victims Unit wouldn’t be a phenomenon without Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay), now captain of Manhattan SVU.
Benson’s decision to join the Manhattan Special Victims Unit was far more than a career maneuver. It was a calling shaped by her childhood. For Benson, the job has always been about more than just catching criminals; it’s about advocating for victims who have no one to fight for them.
So, what exactly led Benson to join the SVU in the first place? Read on to learn why Benson’s core mission of helping victims remains unchanged throughout her 20+ years on the squad.
Why did Olivia Benson join the SVU?
Born as the result of her mother’s s3xual assault, Benson grew up in an unstable household. After learning her origins, Benson grew to realize the emotional toll the assault had on her mother. Benson endured years of abuse because of this. She was forced to witness her mother’s spiral, all while carrying the weight of knowing how she came into the world.
Ultimately, this compelled Benson to want to protect survivors and deliver justice to those who feel powerless. As a result, she joined the Manhattan SVU.
Why Sgt. Fin Tutuola says Benson is “built for the job” on Law & Order: SVU

Viewers were reminded of Benson’s reason for joining the SVU in Season 26 when Benson reconnected with a former victim, Ellie Hughes, shortly after visiting her mother’s grave. Earlier in the season, Ellie was assaulted and left for d3ad by an abusive boyfriend, leaving her comatose. Benson reunited with Ellie and her mother after doctors called Benson with a grim update about her condition. Ellie was pregnant, and based on the timeline, the conception likely occurred after she was admitted to the hospital. A rapist had impregnated Ellie, leading Benson to instantly see her mother — and herself — in the disheartening case.
Sgt. Fin Tutuola (Ice T) knew why this case was personal for Benson. Later, Renee Curry (Aime Donna Kelly) asked Fin how Benson was doing amid the chaos.
“What do you mean?” Fin asked.
“Come on, Fin, don’t pull that,” Curry said, reminding him she was the NYPD’s Internal Affairs Captain for years before joining Benson’s squad. “I know the full story.”
“What story’s that?” Fin asked.
“The reason why Benson joined SVU in the first place is because her mother was r@ped,” Curry said carefully. “And Benson is the child of that r@pe.”
“Look, Benson’s still working through a few things, like the rest of us,” Fin explained. “But those things are what makes her built for this job.”
