Mike Greenberg has suggested that Jerry Jones could go after a big-name college football coach after watching his Dallas Cowboys fail to make the playoffs this season.
Greenberg can perhaps be credited for predicting that Jim Harbaugh was going to sign with the Los Angeles Chargers a while before he was actually linked with the job, reporting that the former Michigan head coach was a huge fan of Justin Herbert and would have preferred coaching him instead of heading to other possibly more attractive destinations.
He’s now linking the Cowboys with Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian.
Sarkisian is focused on taking the Longhorns to the national title game at the moment. Meanwhile, the Cowboys don’t have a coach contracted for next season.
They have denied the Chicago Bears’ request to interview Mike McCarthy, with whom they have an exclusive negotiating window until January 14.
Mike Greenberg Suggests The Cowboys Are Monitoring Steve Sarkisian
The Cowboys haven’t interviewed anyone for their head coaching position yet, and according to Greenberg, it’s likely because they’re waiting for Sarkisian’s Texas campaign to come to an end. The Longhorns are playing Ohio State in the CFP semifinals this Friday and, should they lose, it would free Sarkisian up to speak to Dallas.
“I’m speculating – recklessly perhaps – that Jerry Jones has someone in mind that he wants to see if he can get. And if he can’t get that person, he still wants Mike McCarthy. But what is the big thing that happens between now and Jan. 14,” Greenberg said on ESPN’s ‘Get Up’ on Thursday.
“Steve Sarkisian’s season might end, and he might get the opportunity to have that conversation before the exclusive window.”
ESPN insider Adam Schefter, who joined the show, claimed that re-signing McCarthy is the Cowboys’ No. 1 priority. However, they could have a plan in place should they fail to retain him, as they have already fallen behind other teams in the race to sign a new head coach.
Sarkisian last worked in the NFL in 2018 as Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator. He’s gone 38-16 at Texas since taking the job in 2021.
