The Prince and Princess of Wales were undertaking their first public engagement since July 13
Princess Kate sprang into action as the heavens opened during a royal engagement to shield children from the heavy rain.
The Princess of Wales joined Prince William as they ended a seven-week absence from royal duties with a visit to the Natural History Museum.
Kate and William were at the Museum to see the institution’s newly transformed gardens.
While there, they also met with schoolchildren from Lewisham who were taking part in a pond dipping session.

During the visit, where Kate stunned onlookers with her new blonde locks, the gloomy weather quickly turned for the worse and dumped torrential rain on the party.
The quick-thinking Princess of Wales quickly leapt into action, opening her umbrella and shepherding some nearby children underneath it for protection.
Kate was pictured with other adults on the scene, helping keep the kids dry, and the deluge of raindrops could be seen pelting the various umbrellas.
“Mother Nature made a surprise cameo at the @natural_history_museum!” Kensington Palace wrote in a social media post covering the moment.

“Even with the rain, it was great seeing how the gardens and National Education Nature Park programme are helping young people to connect to nature, combining outdoor learning with wellbeing activities.
“And a pleasure hearing from students of Kendar Primary in Lewisham and Co-op Academy Manchester about projects to support nature and biodiversity,” the post concluded.
The weather chaos soon subsided as the weather relented, and Kate could continue with the schedule of her visit.
Kate and William observed the Museum’s newly transformed gardens and met children and young people taking part in learning programmes which see them connecting with nature and boosting biodiversity in urban areas.

In addition, Kate and William were shown how cutting-edge technology is being used around the garden to inform the Museum’s conservation and research biodiversity projects.
As well as the kids from Lewisham, the couple also met students from Manchester who had created new habitats on their school grounds through the National Education Nature Park programme.
While the battle against the elements gathered some attention, the real head turner of the day was Kate’s new blonde locks.

Kate and William’s last public appearance came at the men’s singles final at Wimbledon on July 13 before they enjoyed their annual summer break.
For the final leg of their recess, the couple and their children joined other members of the Royal Family in Balmoral.
Across the capital on Thursday, Queen Camilla was on her on engagement where she had an opportunity to show off a more playful side.
