Caton’s incredible performance is definitely one of the reasons why reviews for Sinners are amazing. Screen Rant’s own Mae Abdulbaki gave the film a score of 9 out of 10, and it remains the highest-rated movie directed by Ryan Coogler on Rotten Tomatoes (via Rotten Tomatoes). Even though Sinners is a thrilling vampire horror movie, it also explores complex themes, such as race, identity, and community. All these themes are explored through Sammie’s character, which makes him a very important figure in the movie. Therefore, it’s so surprising that Sinners was actually Caton’s first acting role.
Miles Caton’s Sammie Is One Of The Best Parts Of Sinners
Sammie Is A Very Complex Character In Sinners

Sammie grew up as a sharecropper in a small Mississippi town. However, from the very beginning of Sinners, it’s clear that he has higher aspirations. Sammie is passionate about music but his father, the town’s preacher, believes it is a doorway to the evils of the world. Unlike his father, Sammie’s cousins, Smoke and Stack, encourage him to play music, which actually leads to the central conflict of the film. In the world of Sinners, music does indeed attract evil forces, which is why Remmick and his small group of vampires go to Club Juke.

Sammie’s performance in Club Juke in Sinners is truly phenomenal. Based on this performance, it is clear that Caton is an outstanding musical talent. Throughout this performance, many different eras of music are shown, which makes it a fantastic cinematic experience. Even though Sinners transitions into a horror film after this scene, Caton also proves that he is a gifted actor. Therefore, Caton doesn’t solely rely on his musical abilities in Sinners, which is why Samme is one of the best characters in the movie.

Caton Found Success As A Musician Before Being Cast In Sinner

While Caton grew up singing, his acting abilities on display in Sinners make it so surprising that it’s his first ever movie role. While prepping Sinners, Coogler knew that casting the right person to play Sammie was very important. In an interview with Variety, Caton revealed that he was actually touring with R&B singer H.E.R. when the horror movie appeared on his radar. Touring with H.E.R. at just 16 years old is very impressive, and an audience member from one of the shows reached out to Caton about auditioning for Sinners. Talking about how he landed the role, Caton said:
I grew up singing, and I had the opportunity to go on tour and sing background for H.E.R. when I was 16 years old, and we traveled all around the world. We got close — she became like a big sister to me — and she called me one day after we got back from tour, and she was like, “Bro, somebody was in the crowd watching you, and they want you to audition for this role. I think you’ll be dope.” I was like, “OK,” not really knowing what to expect. I did the audition, got a call back, and then sent in a couple of videos of me playing. A couple weeks later, I got the call, and that was it.
In the same interview, Coogler revealed that he knew Caton had a “once in a lifetime” voice during their first Zoom meeting. Therefore, after meeting Caton and hearing his voice, it became easy for Coogler to cast Sammie in Sinners. The filmmaker obviously made the right choice, as Sammie steals the show in many different scenes in the horror movie. After watching Sinners the first time, I never would’ve guessed that it was Caton’s first acting role, which proves how talented he is.
