A BBC Breakfast presenter delivered a Prince William update during Wednesday’s live broadcast. Sarah Campbell and Roger Johnson were presenting from the red sofa on Wednesday (March 18) to bring viewers the latest developments from across the UK and beyond. Moments into the live programme, Sarah revealed some news regarding the Prince of Wales, after the future monarch accompanied Radio 1’s Greg James during his 630-mile tandem bicycle challenge this week.

Greg is five days into an eight-day journey, covering 1,000 km across England, Wales and Scotland to his final stop in Edinburgh. Prince William joined him on the bicycle during the latest stage, pedalling for 30 minutes through the South Yorkshire countryside, before revealing to Greg he had already collected more than £1 million for Comic Relief. Discussing the unexpected appearance on BBC Breakfast, Sarah said: “Now, here’s a sight you don’t see every day”, reports the Mirror.

Footage of William and Greg’s bicycle ride was then displayed on screen, with Sarah adding: “There you go! The Prince of Wales riding a tandem bike with the Radio 1 DJ Greg James. He surprised the breakfast show host as part of his 630-mile bike ride challenge for Comic Relief.”

Roger jokingly observed: “Greg James is quite a unit on the front, isn’t he? You can’t quite see [Prince William] behind.”

Discussing the impressive sum of money that Greg has raised, Roger commented: “It’s a brilliant effort. I think he’s alright, on good form,” with Sarah chiming in: “It’s an extraordinary amount of money. We spoke to Greg, didn’t we, on Sunday morning.

“He was saying that sometimes, the people on the back can be a bit of a burden – you have to pull them along. And sometimes, they’re a boost.”

Roger concluded: “He won’t be saying that about His Royal Highness.”

After the ride, Greg informed fellow Radio 1 presenters Sam MacGregor and Danni Diston that he was still coming to terms with the surprise.

“I’ve got so many flies in my mouth because I’ve been cycling with my mouth wide open. All our jaws are on the floor from how mad that all was,” he stated.

“That’s the tightest I’ve grabbed the handlebars for the whole week. When he left, I just sat down quietly and thought, ‘Fair play, he did not need to do that.’ But I didn’t kill the future king.”

Prince William commended Greg, stating: “What you’ve done is set an example about helping out. That’s the thing. It’s volunteering some of your time, putting yourself through a bit of pain at the same time, and supporting others.

“It’s something we do very well in this country, but we don’t really shout about it enough.”
