NFL Franchise Tag 2025 Predictions: Who are the most likely candidates to receive the designation?

NFL teams have begun the negotiation phase to see who they will assign as their franchise player. They generally fall into the high-salary positions in order to retain them and prevent them from leaving for another team.
What are the dates set to fix the Franchise Players?
From February 18 to March 4, teams can tag a single player at three franchise levels. Once the tag is applied, both parties will have time to negotiate a deal and, if no deal is reached, a major one-year contract will go into effect, further lengthening the process.

The franchise tag gives any team the opportunity to secure a contract with a player for one more season and at the same time gain more time to negotiate a long-term extension.
The biggest drawback is that the label comes as a pre-established salary position, which would affect the salary cap. However, the financial and sporting areas agree to retain him for his performance on the field to provide results in their aspirations for the 2025 season.

For the Miami Dolphins to franchise tag Jevon Holland, he would earn $19.6 million for one season. This would be a setback once the Florida team is over the spending limit, so assigning that amount of money to a player who has never played in a Pro Bowl seems unlikely. However, he is a versatile piece that many teams will covet.
Zack Baun – Philadelphia Eagles
An All-Pro first-team nomination and his recent Super Bowl ring will earn Zack Baun the biggest payday of his career. The linebacker finished with career-best numbers: 151 tackles, 3.5 sacks, four passes defensed and five forced fumbles. He was undoubtedly a key part, but assigning him $27 million under the franchise tag seems too much.
Trey Smith – Kansas City Chiefs
The holes in the Kansas City Chiefs offensive line were exposed in their Super Bowl loss. Now they are about to lose their 25-year-old right guard who has played in the Pro Bowl. He is one of the best players available in free agency, but Andy Reid’s team does not have much money to spend and Trey Smith holds $25 million. That amount of money he can earn in the open market.

If he hadn’t been tagged as a franchise player last season, Tee Higgins might be the most likely candidate to be tagged right now. However, since he has already been tagged once, the Bengals will have to pay him $26.2 million instead of the $21.8 million he earned in 2024. Still, the Bengals will likely do whatever it takes to retain their other star receiver.
