Brenton West was stunned into silence after meeting the owner of a broken SAS statue on The Repair Shop. Wednesday’s instalment of the programme was in honour of the “favourite fixes” the experts on the show have completed, with this episode relating to items from World Wr II. A man named Ian McPherson entered The Repair Shop with a keepsake that told a tale of immense bravery. He presented Brenton and Dominic Chinea with an SAS statue without a head. Ian’s father received the statue in honour of the 50th anniversary of the SAS.

Ian revealed that his father left him the statue after his d3ath in 2002, but unfortunately the head wound up knocked off while they were decorating. Sharing more about his father, Ian said: “He joined the army as soon as he could in the second world wr. Then he joined the SAS when it was formed. The special forces, they do a lot of fighting behind enemy lines. In my dad’s case, he was over in Greece quite a lot.

“He tried to liberate the Greeks and while he was there, he got wounded.”

In a remarkable turn of events, Ian explained that the Greek resistance discovered his dad and saved him.

“He had three b::llets in his leg and they actually cut his lef off on a kitchen table,” Ian said. A stunned Brenton responded: “They c::t his leg 0ff?”

Ian explained they took the life-saving measure because his father was rapidly losing blood. Brenton could only respond with silence as Ian went on to reveal that his father never spoke about the incident, branding him “very modest”.

Brenton observed: “You find that with true heroes. They don’t often talk about it.”

“Everybody said he was a great guy, which is why this means a lot,” Ian said before choking up. “I’m getting upset.”

Ian returned to The Repair Shop and was presented with a fully fixed statue thanks to Brenton’s expertise. As he unveiled the statue, an astounded Ian muttered: “Woah.”

Ian couldn’t stop smiling as he observed the statue was “back to his old self”. Emotion took over as Ian wiped his tears away with a handkerchief.

“I don’t think I could ask for better,” he admitted. “You’ve fair done me proud and my dad too.”
