NFL legend Michael Strahan is reportedly considering a move to purchase a minority stake in the New York Giants.

Known for his roles on ‘Good Morning America’ and ‘FOX NFL Sunday,’ as well as his successful career with the Giants, Strahan is a prominent figure in the league who even has Hollywood aspirations. He could potentially bring Eli Manning into his ownership group as the duo, two of the most beloved and successful former Giants players ever, look to invest in the NFC East franchise.

Strahan and billionaire Marc Lasry are teaming up to make a bid to purchase up to 10 percent of New York’s NFL franchise, per Sportico. Back in February, Giants owners John Mara and Steve Tisch announced they hired Moelis and Co., a global investment bank, to explore the sale of a minority non-controlling stake in the team.

Last year, the NFL voted to allow the sale of non-controlling minority stakes to private investors. However, only a maximum of 10 percent is allowed. Strahan, like Manning, was a Giants player for the entirety of his 15-year career. He is the franchise’s all-time sack leader with 141.5, which is the sixth most in NFL history, and Strahan was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2014.

Strahan, a two-time NFL sacks leader and Defensive Player of the Year, set the single-season sack record with 22.5 in 2001 – a record matched by J. J. Watt exactly 20 years later. He also played a key role in the Giants’ Super Bowl XLII victory over the New England Patriots.

Spotrac reports that Strahan earned $76.4 million during his playing career and is now eyeing an ownership role. His earnings have continued to grow post-retirement, thanks to hosting gigs on GMA and ‘FOX NFL Sunday.’

Strahan’s contract with GMA is due to end this year, and he has no plans to renew it. Despite hosting GMA since 2016, he reportedly prefers the idea of working less; ‘FOX NFL Sunday’ only requires one episode per week, and Strahan intends to stay on the show.

Manning recently considered joining Strahan’s group but ultimately decided against it. The two-time Super Bowl champion quarterback retired after the 2019 NFL season and currently works in a public relations/ambassador role for the franchise.

The Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins have already secured deals with private equity firms for minority ownership stakes. The Eagles also sold approximately eight percent of their franchise to a family investment duo.

The Giants, the third-most valuable NFL franchise, are reportedly worth around $7.65 billion. It is yet to be seen when Strahan and Lasry will make their move. The Mara family established the Giants in 1925 for a mere $500. In 1991, the Tisch family bought a 50 percent share in the franchise for $75 million.

With sports team valuations, including those of NFL teams, skyrocketing in recent years, Strahan will likely have to dig deep into his pockets.
