Michael Strahan’s exit from Good Morning America (GMA) has caught fans and coworkers off guard. The TV personality and former NFL player was said to have turned down a $20 million contract, leading to speculation that he had his reasons for exiting. Strahan has yet to announce else his next moves after leaving “Good Morning America,” but insiders say he is looking for fresh opportunities in the world of entertainment and business.
A Shocking Exit
Strahan’s departure from GMA surprised many, not least because he’d just signed a multi-year contract with ABC. Strahan reportedly notified the network of his decision in late January, before announcing he would officially leave on February 1. His last appearance on the show was an emotional one, with the co-hosts Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos praising his contributions and wishing him well.
“Michael has been such a huge part of the GMA family,” Roberts said on the broadcast. “We’re going to miss his energy, his humor, and his big heart. But we know this isn’t farewell—it’s just ‘see you later.’ ”
Why Did He Leave?
While Strahan has not publicly explained his exit, sources said he felt the time had come for him to take on a new challenge. “Michael has always been a boundary pusher and someone who likes to try new things,” said a person with knowledge of the star. “He’s had so many great years at GMA, but this next chapter is one he is ready for.”
Another factor may have been Strahan’s packed schedule. On top of GMA, he hosts a $100,000 Pyramid, produces multiple TV shows, and owns a successful clothing line. It may have just been too much all around to continue balancing those commitments on top of the high-energy presence he brings to GMA every day.
Leaving $20 Million Behind
The most shocking part of Strahan’s departure is how much cash he left on the table. His ABC contract reportedly was worth $20 million, making his departure all the more shocking. But people who know Strahan say he’s never been motivated only by money.
“Michael wants to grow and prosper,” said a close friend. “If he feels like he’s not growing or challenged, he’s not afraid to walk away, even if it means walking away from money.”
What’s Next for Strahan?
So, what’s next for Strahan? As of February 2025, Strahan has not publicly said what he’ll do next, but there are plenty of rumors. Others think he could return to sports broadcasting while even others think he may focus on his production company, SMAC Entertainment, which has produced popular shows such as Good Morning America and Live with Kelly and Mark.
Also in the mix is talk that Strahan wants to get out there to expand his business investments beyond his Components by Michael Strahan clothing, which has seen monumental success. “Michael’s always been shrewd when it comes to business,” a source said. “He has a lot of irons in the fire, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he brought one of them to the next level.”
Fans Reaction
Fans expressed sadness as well as their appreciation for Strahan on social media following the news. “I’m going to miss seeing Michael on GMA every morning,” one fan on Twitter commented. “He added so much joy and positivity to the show.
Others commended Strahan for trusting his instincts and taking chances. “Walking away from $20 million takes a stone,” another fan wrote. “But if anyone can do it, it’s Michael Strahan. Can’t wait to see what he’ll do next.”
A Legacy at GMA
Strahan emerged as one of morning television’s most recognizable faces during his time at GMA. With his infectious smile, quick wit, and genuine warmth, he carried the show to become one of the highest-rated morning programs in the country.
