Award-winning French actor and director Arnaud Denis has died aged 43 after years of severe health problems, having previously told followers that his physical suffering had become unbearable.
The Molière Award winner, known for productions including Les Liaisons Dangereuses and Les Femmes Savantes, chose euthanasia in Belgium, according to his lawyer Philippe Courtois.
Courtois confirmed the news to AFP and said Denis had made the decision following consultation with three doctors in Namur.
“His body could no longer carry him. He had lost control of it,” the lawyer said.
“Arnaud Denis’s death is the consequence of the intense pain he had been enduring for many months.”
The source states that Denis died on May 22, 2026, although the farewell message quoted in the same report refers to him travelling to Belgium on September 22.
Years of Serious Health Problems
Denis had been dealing with severe health difficulties for several years.
According to the report, his problems intensified after surgery for a right groin hernia in July 2023, during which a polypropylene mesh was fitted.
His health subsequently deteriorated, and in April 2024 he travelled to the United States to have the implant removed.
Although that procedure was described as successful, Denis reportedly continued experiencing serious effects from the earlier operation.
He was also suffering from severe myalgic encephalomyelitis, commonly known as ME.
His condition eventually left him largely confined to his home and unable to live the life he had previously enjoyed.
Actor Shared Emotional Farewell
Before his death, Denis posted a deeply personal message on Facebook explaining his decision and addressing those who had followed his health struggles.
“My illness is at a very advanced stage, and I have decided to end my life,” he wrote.
He said his thoughts were with others living with severe ME and described having lost much of his physical strength and ability to eat normally.
“The physical suffering has become truly unbearable,” he wrote.
Denis was also careful to stress that his decision was personal.
“I want to make it clear that my personal choice should not influence anyone,” he said.
Instead, he hoped his death would encourage greater understanding of how devastating severe myalgic encephalomyelitis can become.
He wrote that he wanted both the public and healthcare professionals to recognise the seriousness of the condition and the extreme limitations it can impose on some patients.
‘I Can’t Go On Any Longer’
In another passage from his farewell, Denis said that after three years of declining health, he felt unable to continue living with the level of suffering he was experiencing.
He again emphasised that his message was intended to raise awareness rather than encourage anyone else to make the same decision.
His words focused repeatedly on other people living with severe ME, whom he referred to as his “brothers and sisters in the struggle”.
Final Post Shared With Followers
Denis’ final social media post referenced the closing scene of the 1978 film Midnight Express.
He accompanied the post with a short final message to his followers: “With all my love to everyone.”
The actor had built an acclaimed career across stage and screen before his health deteriorated, earning recognition including a prestigious Molière Award.
His death has now drawn renewed attention not only to his work but also to the serious illness he had spoken about publicly in his final years.
For Denis, his last message was intended to leave behind more than a goodbye.
He wanted his experience to highlight the reality faced by people living with the most severe forms of ME — and to encourage greater awareness of an illness that, in his case, had transformed every part of his life.
