Spanish Actor Francesc Garrido Dies Aged 56 as Emotional Tributes Pour In
Spanish film and television actor Francesc Garrido has died at the age of 56, prompting an outpouring of tributes from friends, former colleagues and leading cultural figures.
The Barcelona-born star reportedly died on Monday following a heart condition. Further details surrounding his death have not been made public.
Garrido was widely recognised for his performances in The Gypsy Bride, The Sea Inside and Gangs of Galicia, as well as a long list of Spanish-language films, television dramas and theatre productions.
News of his sudden passing left several of his fellow actors struggling to process the loss.
Actor Pepón Nieto wrote: “In shock at the loss of Francesc Garrido. It was an honour to have known him. Rest in peace, my friend.”
Paula Echevarría, who appeared alongside Garrido in the television drama Gran Reserva, also said she was “in shock” after learning that her former co-star had died.
From Barcelona to the London stage
Born on September 7, 1969, Garrido developed his craft at the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona before continuing his training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
His formal training helped lay the foundations for a career that would eventually span cinema, television and theatre.
Garrido made his film debut in the 1999 historical drama The City of Marvels. He went on to appear in acclaimed Spanish-language productions including Smoking Room and Alatriste.
His screen career continued to grow as he secured prominent television roles, including a leading part in the thriller series Sé quién eres, known internationally as I Know Who You Are.
He later reached audiences through projects including The Gypsy Bride and Netflix crime drama Gangs of Galicia.
Catalonia pays tribute to celebrated actor
Salvador Illa, President of the Government of Catalonia, described Garrido as one of the region’s great performers.
“The sudden death of Francesc Garrido has surprised and struck us,” Illa said.
“We lost one of the great Catalan actors, who left us memorable performances in theatre, cinema and television.”
Illa praised Garrido for combining “rigour, talent, passion and commitment” in both his artistic work and his personal relationships.
He concluded by offering his condolences to the actor’s family, friends and colleagues.
Catalonia’s Minister of Culture, Sònia Hernández, also paid tribute, saying Garrido’s work had earned a lasting place in the region’s cultural memory.
“Francesc Garrido’s talent and performances are part of our cultural memory,” she said. “My warmest regards to his family, friends and colleagues.”
Film industry remembers ‘outstanding’ talent
Spanish production and distribution company Filmax described Garrido as one of the most significant actors of the past three decades.
In a message shared on X, the company said it was “deeply saddened” by his death and remembered his contributions across film, television and theatre.
“It was an honour to work with him,” the company added before sending condolences to those closest to him.
Garrido’s range allowed him to move between major screen productions and character-driven television dramas, earning admiration from both audiences and those who worked alongside him.
The messages shared following his death repeatedly remembered not only his performances but also the impression he made away from the cameras.
No information about funeral or memorial arrangements has yet been announced.
He leaves behind a body of work stretching across more than 25 years and a place in Spanish and Catalan cultural history that colleagues believe will endure long after his death.
