Strictly Come Dancing star Dianne Buswell has spoken openly about the harrowing birth of her first child, revealing she required an emergency caesarean section that left her in agonising pain.
The 37-year-old Australian dancer broke down while discussing the ordeal on the Oxydise podcast on Thursday.
“I just burst into tears,” she told the programme. “The pain of having to sit up and trying to manoeuvre myself out of bed was just unbearable.”
The professional dancer, who welcomed son Bowden in March this year, described the aftermath of the surgical procedure as an incredibly difficult experience.
Her candid account lifted the lid on just how challenging the arrival of her baby boy proved to be, with the new mother reflecting emotionally on the severity of what she endured.
Ms Buswell and her partner Joe Sugg first crossed paths when they were paired together on the BBC dance competition back in 2018. Their relationship has flourished since that initial meeting on the show.
The couple celebrated a major milestone earlier this year with the arrival of their son on March 16, 2026.
Ms Buswell announced the happy news on social media at the time, writing: “Never felt a love like it Baby Bowden Mark Richard Sugg. 16/03/26.”
The new mother has since kept fans updated on her journey into parenthood through regular posts on her social media channels.
However, until now she had not publicly addressed the complications surrounding the birth itself, keeping the full extent of her difficult experience private for several months.
Ms Buswell made Strictly history in 2025 when she became the first professional dancer to compete on the programme whilst expecting a baby.
She was partnered with Neighbours actor Stefan Dennis for Series 23 of the BBC show.
Their time on the competition was cut short, however, after just four weeks when Dennis sustained a calf injury that forced the pair to withdraw.

The pregnancy announcement had come during what proved to be a memorable but ultimately brief run on the series.
Despite the early exit, Buswell’s participation whilst pregnant marked a significant moment for the long-running dance show.
It was during the months that followed her departure from the competition that the dancer’s pregnancy complications would take a serious toll on her wellbeing.
Buswell revealed that the complications from her emergency caesarean put her entire professional career at risk.
Her primary concern in the aftermath was whether she would ever return to the dance floor.
“My number one thing is how am I gonna recover and am I going to be able to dance again,” she said on the podcast.
The fear of losing her livelihood added an extra layer of distress to an already traumatic period for the dancer.
Meanwhile, the couple chose a name for their son with deep personal significance. Bowden is taken from the village where Sugg and his sister Zoe spent their childhood, making it a meaningful tribute to his family roots.
The baby’s full name, Bowden Mark Richard Sugg, was shared by Buswell when she first announced his arrival.
