This afternoon’s instalment of GB News was interupted by a breaking news announcement as temperatures have soared across the UK today, marking the start of the May Bank Holiday weekend. Host Nana Akua was joined by weather journalist Nathan Rao, who offered his advice and a warning for people trying to stay cool as the nation braces itself for temperatures as high as 33C.

Nathan, who made it clear he enjoyed the heat, began: “I’m 100 per cent with you, Nana, I can’t get it hot enough. And as you say, it’s the first summer heatwave of the year, and it’s not even summer yet; it’s still spring. But over the weekend, we are going to see temperatures in the 30s tomorrow and possibly Monday, which would be a record. The record is 32.8C so I say get out there and enjoy it.”

“Spend the evening in a bar because this is perfect weather,” he continued. “Usually when I come on during bank holidays, I am talking about storms, but this time we have got the best weather we have had all year. It’s a beautiful bank holiday ahead.”

Following his enthusiastic update, Nana asked him for his thoughts on the Government’s public health guidance on the heat.

The guest replied: “We spend all year waiting for the warm weather, and when it comes, it seems like everyone is warning us not to enjoy it. I can understand why people get frustrated.”

He said the warning is targeted at the elderly and vulnerable, as well as people who might want to “jump into the sea” when the water is still choppy and cold.

“If you have elderly or vulnerable people who suffer from the heat, make sure they do not get overheated by drawing the curtains during the hottest part of the day,” he warned. “It’s sensible precautions! Please do enjoy it.”

His interview follows the UK Health Security Agency issuing its first amber heat-health alert of the year, warning that high temperatures may put vulnerable people at increased risk.
