Top contender in NFL 2025, BUT can Josh Allen finally lead the Bills to a Super Bowl? The answer lies with Patrick Mahomes!
There’s no doubt that the Buffalo Bills are one of the top contenders for the 2025 season. It’s worth noting that the team led by Josh Allen is the only franchise in the league that betting houses have listed as favorites in every single game they will play next season. Of course, that could all change-especially if a key injury occurs.

Right now, the Bills may be in the most unbalanced division in the AFC. You have the New England Patriots, who are headed in the right direction but still not a real threat; the New York Jets, who are launching yet another rebuild, this time with Justin Fields; and the Miami Dolphins, who seem dangerous on paper but remain an unknown due to Tua Tagovailoa’s recurring injuries.
So at first glance, it looks like the Bills have a clear path-but that’s nothing to celebrate. Now, reaching the playoffs is an obligation. The real challenge is to go deep, and that means beating Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs-something Josh Allen hasn’t been able to do in four straight matchups.
Josh Allen needs to fix a problem on offense
It’s important to remember that Josh Allen led a lethal offense in 2024. Despite not having any star receivers, the Bills averaged 30.9 points per game-second only to the Detroit Lions, who topped the league in that category.
Once again, Allen wasn’t given a top-tier receiver. The team only signed veterans Joshua Palmer and Elijah Moore. However, if Keon Coleman takes a step forward, the Bills’ quarterback shouldn’t have much trouble putting up similar numbers.
That said, there’s one scenario Allen must either resolve or know how to handle: the case of James Cook. The running back is in the final year of his contract, and the Bills have shown no interest in extending him. Cook is seeking a deal worth $15 million per year, but the front office doesn’t appear interested at the moment. Analyst Alex Ballentine from Bleacher Report gave his take:
“If those tensions turn into a legitimate holdout, the Bills could be missing out on one of the few non-Allen reasons for their success.”
Cook is coming off two straight seasons with over 1,000 rushing yards. He also scored 16 touchdowns on the ground. That’s why Ballentine emphasized how crucial Cook is to this team:
“James Cook had nearly 400 more yards from scrimmage than any other player on the offense. His emergence as a dual-threat running back has been one of the reasons Brandon Beane deserves credit for building a supporting cast that complements Allen.”
This is the make-or-break year. Josh Allen must lead the Bills to the Super Bowl. Anything short of that could be considered a failure, and questions will start to surface about whether Allen is truly the one to take Buffalo to the NFL’s biggest stage.
