BREAKING NEWS: BBC Breakfast paused for breaking news as ‘national emergency’ announced

BBC Breakfast shared a breaking news announcement just minutes into the programme. Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty began Saturday’s (July 25) show by issuing an update about two European cities, revealing Bordeaux and Madrid are under threat from “raging wildfires”.
People living in the suburbs of Bordeaux have been told to leave their homes as the blaze begins to approach the city in the south west of the country.

Naga added that more than 200,000 people have already fled. Meanwhile, authorities in Madrid have revealed they “don’t have the capacity” to contain the wildfire which is spreading near the capital.
A breaking BBC News banner then appeared on the screen, revealing that emergency services spent the night battling the wildfires in the two cities.
Charlie handed over to World News correspondent Joe Inwood, who confirmed that Spain has declared the wildfires a “national emergency”.

“Spain says these fires are impossible to control, but still, they try,” he told viewers in a voiceover. Imagery from the devastating wildfires aired on screen, showing firefighters attempting to contain the blaze.
One of the worst-hit locations is Cebreros, where a combination of drought, extreme heat and climate change has left large parts of the town in ruins.
A local named Janet opened up about how “nervous” she had been feeling as she had never experienced something like this before in her life.
