SHOCKING NUMBERS: Find out how many migrants have been returned to France as arrivals surge towards 10,000

    Migrant Channel crossing incidents

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper defended the migrant returns deal with France as the number of arrivals since the scheme was introduced surged towards 10,000.

Just 26 people have been deported to Paris since Keir Starmer’s one-in, one-out deal with Emmanuel Macron came into force on August 7.

Ms Cooper said there was “huge potential” for deportations to increase under the scheme, the aim of which in its pilot stage is to “get things going”.

    Migrant Channel crossing incidents

“With the pilot now being rolled out, now, we have the potential to be able to ramp it up,” she told LBC.

“I do want to see those numbers increase. I also want to see that be built with other countries as well. We do have to test processes and deliver it.

Starmer, Macron unveil migration deal and deeper defence ties

“If you remember, the previous government ran a Rwanda scheme that ran for two-and-a-half years, didn’t return a single person.”

Ms Cooper, who worked closely on implementing the UK-French deal in her previous brief as home secretary, told BBC Breakfast: “It’s a pilot phase, but that has huge potential, because that is returning for the first time people who arrive on small boats… where the boats set off from.

“That was something that was never possible under the previous government.”

Some 35,503 people have crossed the English Channel in small boats so far this year, 33% higher than at this point in 2024.

And an ally of the French interior minister Bruno Retailleau, Xavier Bertrand, said France should stand by and let migrants freely cross the Channel to “scare” Labour into taking action.

    Northern Ireland Western Balkans Summit | Nation/World | bdtonline.com

The president of the Hauts-de-France region claimed Paris is “guarding the border” for Britain.

And he said the UK is responsible for the small boats crisis alongside the people smugglers.

Despite Britain agreeing to hand over more than £660m to stop migrants leaving their shores, Mr Bertrand claimed “we’re practically forced to beg them to give us part of the cheque they owe us”.

In fresh incendiary comments, the French politician declared: “We should tell the Border Force, ‘This week, stay at home, we don’t want to see you and we’re going to let everyone through.

“Then you’ll see what happens: the English will get scared, and in two days they’ll sit down at the table with proposals to change things. Right now, we’re practically forced to beg them to give us part of the cheque they owe us simply because we’re guarding the border for them. That’s enough.

“Let the migrants through. My proposal isn’t very clever. But it’s the only one that can change things.”

More than 35,000 migrants have crossed the Channel so far this year, despite a one-in-one-out returns deal being agreed between London and Paris.

And more than 20 people have d!ed attempting to reach the UK in a small boat.

But Mr Bertrand bizarrely claimed France was indifferent to the fact that “people are dying every week”, adding: “Very clearly, we know who is primarily responsible: the smugglers, the criminals who exploit these networks.

“The second party responsible is the British. Because there wouldn’t be these d3aths, there wouldn’t be hundreds of people trying to cross every week, if they didn’t have jobs in Britain.”

Mr Bertrand said he held Britain, along with people-smugglers, responsible for d3aths in the Channel because of the UK’s “hypocrisy” over its stance on the black market economy.

He said: “The British say, ‘now we’re going to set up a legal immigration channel. That means we’re going to accept them legally and then send them back to France’.”

Mr Bertrand, who has backed Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau’s potential Presidential bid in 2027, also slammed Keir Starmer’s one-in, one-out deal.

He said: “Of course, it can’t work. We’ll just end up having two channels, one illegal and one legal.”

It comes as fury erupted over the Taliban seemingly selling fake death threat documents for as little as £40 to allow migrants to game the Home Office.

Corrupt officials in Afghanistan produce government letters threatening to k!ll asylum seekers. The letters are then used as evidence in asylum applications.

They include warnings that the Taliban will “deliver justice upon you” — shorthand for execution — for co-operating with the “evil government of England”.

One letter says: “The mujahideen monitor all your activity on social media and will deliver justice when they see you. God will be pleased and you will be freed from this shameful life.”

Shadow Home Office minister Katie Lam said: “When asylum seekers are openly boasting about using death threats to game the asylum system, serious questions must be asked of the Home Office, starting with how many forgeries have been detected in asylum applications.

“If the department can be duped so easily, it is no wonder thousands are crossing the Channel unchecked, in hopes of launching an asylum claim as soon as they arrive.

“Every day ministers refuse to act, our border security is weakened. Anyone who comes here illegally should be detained and swiftly removed, either to their own country or a safe third country. This government talks tough but delivers nothing, and the British public are paying the price.”

The BBC has come under fire from campaigners for older people after axing telephone voting on Strictly Come Dancing. The broadcaster said the phone-in voting system was “outdated” and expensive to run, and is instead urging people to use their online BBC account to cast votes for the dancing competition.

But the Silver Voices campaign group said the decision sidelines many older people and highlights how the corporation is treating them with “arrogant disdain”. Director Dennis Reed said: “The fury over the axing of telephone voting on popular shows on the BBC such as Strictly is completely justified.

“Thousands of older people in particular, who are not online, are being denied the right to be involved in participative entertainment which they pay for through the licence fee. To ask people without a smartphone to scan a QR code on the screen is frustrating gobbledygook for many Silver Voices members.

“This is yet another example of how BBC executives view their loyal older viewers, that is with arrogant disdain.”

Mr Reed claimed the move was linked to the looming switch-off of terrestrial television.

He added: “There are already constant nudges on BBC programmes to register with iPlayer and many BBC services and programmes which are only available if you have fast broadband in the house.

“Any decision to scrap the current universal Freeview TV system in the UK, which has huge public support even amongst those who do use streaming services, would cause public uproar. Making access to TV contingent on buying an expensive broadband product would undermine democracy.”

Viewers will now only be able to vote online for BBC programmes such as Strictly, Eurovision and Sports Personality of the Year.

A BBC spokesperson said: “We understand that the changes to the premium-rate phone vote is disappointing for some viewers.

“We know fans of Strictly who like to vote by phone will be impacted and it’s not something we would have chosen.

“The decision to discontinue such services was made by BT, who previously supplied this to service providers working with the BBC and other broadcasters.

“We have carefully explored phone voting alternatives that would be in-line with Ofcom regulations, including ensuring that the Strictly vote is timely and reliable.

“Unfortunately, no viable replacement is available and so voting will now take place online for all BBC programmes.

“Online voting is already the most popular method for voting on BBC shows with the majority of votes in the last series of Strictly cast this way.

“To support those new to online voting, clear instructions will be provided during the show. All you need to cast a vote is a free BBC account, which is quick and easy to set up.”

HEARTBREAKING: Kelvin Fletcher and Family Heartbroken as Fire Destroys Farm in TEARFUL ANNOUNCEMENT

Kelvin và Liz Fletcher chào đón máy quay trở lại trang trại Peak District của họ

Former Emmerdale actor Kelvin Fletcher and his wife Liz are back on screens – but they’re still reeling from a catastrophic fire on their estate.

Kelvin Fletcher welcomes cameras back onto his farm for a third series, and proudly tells cameras he finally feels like a bonafide farmer. “This is my version of a happy life, we’ve found our purpose now,” he says.

Cặp đôi chia sẻ trang trại Cheshire của họ với bốn đứa con, tất cả đều tham gia vào công việc đồng áng

Joining Kelvin in the fourth year of Fletcher’s Family Farm is his wife Liz and their four children – Marnie, Milo and twins Mateusz and Maximus. “I’d even go as far to say the kids are farmers,” Liz says.

The family’s Peak District farm – nestled in Cheshire – is busier than ever. Lambing season is in full swing, and even the twins are lending a hand.

“It’s our fourth year lambing,” Kelvin says. “We’re well and truly in our groove. The lambs are flying out at the moment which is great. We’re not having to get involved at all. It’s exactly what you want.”

But there’s more than lambs joining the fold this season. For the first time, the Fletchers welcome a breeding bull to grow their herd – following the success of their prize cow, Cherry, who was crowned Supreme Champion at the Royal Cheshire Show.

Kelvin và Liz Fletcher đã gặp phải một rào cản lớn trước khi quay chương trình mới của họ

“We’ve never had a male come on the farm to serve before. I’m excited,” says Kelvin, “The cows were way more excited than him.” The bull’s arrival holds a deeper meaning for Kelvin.

He decided to name him Crowther in honour of his late best friend, Steven Crowther. “He’s named after my best mate who sadly passed away,” Kelvin says.

“Every time I look at Crowther, I think of my mate. Some of my best memories were with him by my side. If Crowther was going to be an animal, he’d be a bull.”

Kelvin even shared the touching tribute with his late friend’s parents. “I took a picture and sent it to his mum and dad. They were delighted,” Kelvin says.

However, amid the highs came a devastating low. During a rare family trip away, their farmhouse caught fire. “We took the whole family away and a few days in, we got a call saying the house was on fire,” Liz remembers.

“Our first reaction was ‘thank god we weren’t here.’” The fire tore through the roof of their beloved home they’d spent years restoring. To make matters worse – the extensive smoke damage has rendered the home inhabitable for the family.

“It was the stuff of nightmares,” Kelvin says, “Our neighbour called us. She was in a panic and the fire was roaring.” But their hands were tied. “The fire brigade was called. It was surreal. We were in another country, there was nothing we could do,” Kelvin remembers.

Still, the Fletchers take it all in stride as they walk through the charred remains of their belongings in Fletchers’ Family Farm. “We just have to clean up and tidy up,” Kelvin says with a smile. “One thing I love is a rebound,” Liz jokes, “My ironing board’s gone. Luckily, I never did any ironing.”

The Fletchers aren’t just focused on livestock this year. Kelvin has set his signs on restoring the farm’s legacy as a mixed operation. “This farm was, once upon a time, a mixed farm,” Kelvin says, “It did livestock but it grew crops as well from barley, oats, potatoes. However, for the last 20 years, it’s been pure livestock.”

Now, the family are taking on a new challenge – growing their own oats. “We’re going to grow some oats and hopefully, in six, nine months from now we’ll be sitting at our breakfast table eating our own oats,” Kelvin says. The plan kicks off with Kelvin ploughing his first oat field with over four tonnes of specialist machinery.

But Liz wasn’t as convinced. “This is definitely Kelvin’s idea and I said I didn’t think it was possible,” Liz says. “We have a lot of things against us. But he was determined we were going to make oats. It’s such a different venture to us.”

Their oldest daughter Marnie, now eight, is also stepping into her farming boots. Passionate about animals, she’s raising her own herd of Jacob lambs and learning the ropes of shepherding from her father.

UNACCEPTABLE: Loose Women fans made the SAME COMPLAINT just minutes after the ITV show began

    Samantha Womack

Loose Women fans issued the same complaint just minutes into Monday’s (October 13) show as they fumed, “Oh god”.

Today’s edition of the hit ITV show was hosted by Jane Moore and also featured Oti Mabuse, Myleene Klass, and Gloria Hunniford as they delved into the day’s top stories.

    Phụ nữ lỏng lẻo

Among the topics discussed were the recent Gaza ceasefire in Israel and the increased use of Artificial Intelligence in everyday life, including ChatGPT.

Later in the show, former EastEnders star Samantha Womack spoke about her national theatre play, New England, which tells the uplifting and inspiring story of Gareth Southgate’s revolutionary tenure as England manager.

However, ITV viewers were quickly left frustrated by the panellists repeatedly talking over each other and Samantha.

“Let her speak FFS, stop interrupting,” one person wrote on X (formerly Twitter), with another adding: “My god this is painful.”

A different viewer said: “Is this for real? Cringe #LooseWomen,” with a fourth fan echoing the sentiment, saying: “I can’t bear the talking over one another, it’s so annoying.”

During her interview, Samantha shared the history behind her exciting new play, while also reflecting on her EastEnders exit as Ronnie Mitchell back in 2017.

“When you’re in a place for nine years and you’re playing that character everyday, and you’re embedded in family structure… You get to know this wonderful group of people for such a long time,” she said.

“I thought it was shot beautifully and actually in retrospect, it’s very easy to hold onto safetly, particularly in our game. Being self-employed is terrifying.

“My whole outlook on life has changed in the last two years. I got diagnosed with breast cancer and survived it for now. The beauty of all of it, the beauty of every single little thing that happens to you; the ups, the downs, the whatever, it’s the beautiful chaos of it all.

“I look back on that time and think I was absolutely blessed to be in a space with gorgeous people for nine years. I was then blessed to be terrified and have to start again in my forties. I was so scared but I learned a lot.”

The news comes after Loose Women faced backlash following a special musical episode that was broadcast last week to commemorate World Mental Health Day.

SADNESS: Strictly Balvinder Sopal BROKE THE SILENCE as she gave AN EIGHT-WORD answer after a poor performance

Strictly fans left furious as Balvinder Sopal ends up in dance off: 'Completely undeserved' | The Independent

Strictly Come Dancing star Balvinder Sopal has opened up after finding herself in the second dance-off of the series alongside her professional partner Julian Callion. The EastEnders star, 46, received the lowest public vote, joining Lorraine presenter Ross King in the bottom two. Balvinder and Julian performed their Foxtrot to ‘The Way You Look Tonight’ from Swing Time for a second time, while Ross, 63, and his partner Jowita Przystal returned to the dancefloor with their Paso Doble to the Thunderbirds theme.

Judges Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Shirley Ballas and Anton Du Beke all unanimously voted to save Balvinder, meaning it was the end of the road for Ross and Jowita. Penning an emotional message on Instagram after she was saved, Balvinder began with a poignant five words. “Another first…. the dance off!,” she wrote. “I am certainly getting the full Strictly experience.

“It’s the most difficult part of the show, I think. We all work so hard, all week, and none of us wants to go home. So when one of us does… it shakes the group.”

Balvinder expressed her admiration for Ross and praised Jowita’s remarkable talent on the dancefloor, describing their partnership as “wonderful.”

The actress continued: “@therossking you are so beautiful and it’s been a pleasure getting know you. I’ve loved our conversations and loved laughing with you. It’s not good bye, its see you soon, dear friend.

“@jowitaprzystal you are dynamite and it has been a dream watching you burn the dance floor over the years and then to finally be in the same room with you and watch you do your thing – pure magic. You are incredible and you and Ross together were wonderful.

Balvinder expressed gratitude to the judges for their feedback and emphasised that as the competition grows tougher, she and Julian will demonstrate resilience and determination to bounce back stronger each time, should they find themselves in the dance-off again.

The soap star added: “Thank you to the judges for all the constructive and positive feedback, both before and after the dance off. As the competition steps up, #TeamBalian will work even harder to smash every dance & dance off (if we should find ourselves there again) and we’ll bounce back, each time.

“And to you the viewers… thank you for all your love and support, I’m genuinely blown away by it all ??????. Please keep voting. Every vote matters now more than ever.”

She concluded: “@julian_caillon, we ain’t done yet! Come, let’s dance.”

    Nick Knowles và vợ Katie

Nick Knowles has made a “hilarious” claim about his recent wedding as he joked he has “never owned a house”. The DIY: SOS host wed Katie in an extravagant six-figure ceremony in June.

Nick and Katie, who is 27 years his junior, had been together for four years before they said their vows. They first crossed paths in 2019 and officially became a couple two years later in 2021. The former Strictly Come Dancing star proposed during a trip to New Orleans two years ago. Their wedding took place at the opulent Braxted Park in Essex. Now, Nick has brushed off any suggestions that lingerie businesswoman Katie, 34, married him for his wealth.

Speaking to The Telegraph, he quipped: “This idea that she’s married me for money is hilarious.”

Nick, 63, further stated: “Katie is far more intelligent and successful than me. I’ve never even owned a house and I give maybe 40 per cent of what I earn to charity.”

“Don’t get me wrong, I do all right and I can pay my bills, but I drive a 12-year-old Range Rover and the watch I’m wearing was a present.”

Nick and Katie’s paths first crossed in 2019 when Nick’s youngest son Eddie, nine, struck up a friendship with Katie’s daughter at a play centre. Just last week, Katie was rushed to hospital due to complications from life-saving surgery. The television personality shared a photo of his wife in hospital as she recuperated from the procedure.

Nick Knowles đã chia sẻ một bức ảnh của anh và vợ Katie Dadzie, người đã trở lại bệnh viện sau ca phẫu thuật cứu sống

He posted: “Poor Katie Knowles back in hospital again. More complications after her lifesaving surgery last week – but still smiling through all the pain and medical procedures. (When she’s not crying with the pain).

“I can’t tell you how much my wonderful wife has gone through over the past few months – and I don’t mean just living with me.

“The medical procedures and painful recovery, the setbacks and starting from square one again – and she does all this with enormous resilience and determination and the occasional cry. I’m so proud of her.”

Katie underwent a hysterectomy during the summer following years of agonising endometriosis pain.

However, 12 weeks into her recovery, she encountered a devastating setback when her previously stitched cervix ruptured.

She described the ordeal as “the most terrifying day I’ve ever had” and detailed horrific symptoms including excruciating abdominal pain, breathing troubles, and internal bleeding.

Taking to Instagram, Katie revealed: “The bit where they took my cervix and sealed it up ruptured which basically meant my insides went rogue, with crippling abdominal pains, difficulty breathing.

“Also incredibly painful gas, blood like Moses parting the Red Sea, fluid, and even my bowel where it definitely didn’t belong,” she continued, detailing her shocking symptoms.

“When it happened, I was in so much pain I couldn’t move or walk and just cried on my own in the kitchen from 2-5.30am. I nearly passed out from the pain.”

HEARTBREAKING: Lorraine Kelly issues STATEMENT after shocking ITV show AXED

Chương trình truyền hình 'Lorraine', London, Vương quốc Anh - 10 tháng 9 năm 2025

TV presenter Lorraine Kelly has described the cuts to her show as “heartbreaking” as she opened up about the upcoming changes. It was previously revealed that over 220 staff members face redundancy, with significant schedule restructuring planned across ITV. Despite earlier speculation that she might quit, the 65-year-old has vowed to continue with her self-titled programme. She said: “I don’t see me going anywhere until people get fed up, you know? Until people say, I’ve had enough of that one.”

Speaking about the cuts, which will see her show slashed from an hour to 30 minutes and limited it to 30 weeks a year, Lorraine said her first concern was for the team affected by the changes. The presenter admitted: “It’s really heartbreaking to split up the team, a lot of my team have been with me for more than 20 years and they’re my friends. I’ve grown up with them. They were babies when they started with me and now they’ve got babies of their own.

Chương trình truyền hình 'Lorraine', London, Vương quốc Anh - 19 tháng 5 năm 2025

“It’s been difficult with the cuts, it’s been hard. I’m a lot happier about it now but it was honestly and genuinely all about the team. I wasn’t annoyed or angry about this for me..it was about the team.”

Lorraine explained she was glad that many members of her team had since been redeployed to other shows.

The Scottish star made it clear that the recent changes to her show haven’t brought forward any plans for retirement. Lorraine said she hopes to continue working well into old age, drawing inspiration from fellow presenters like Loose Women’s Janet Street Porter and Gloria Hunniford, who remain active in their careers into their 70s and 80s.

Lorraine added: “You look at these astonishing women who are just getting into their stride in their 70s and 80s, and I look at them and I think, ‘Yep, I’m still going to be there.’”

Lorraine mentioned she had a feeling the cuts were coming, noting that despite budget constraints, they’ve worked hard to maintain high-quality guests on the show, reports The Mirror.

The ITV host said: “It was kind of like, we sort of had an inkling that things were going to change. Because we’ve made a lot of cuts, and we’ve been trying really hard to make sure that because we don’t have that much money, we actually punch way above our weight for the quality of guests that we get on.

“I mean, I’ve just been talking to George Clooney for God’s sake. He wanted to talk to me.”

Isabel Hodgins, star of Emmerdale, has been showered with messages of support following a touching update on her marriage. The actress, who plays Victoria Sugden in the ITV soap, has been a key part of many major storylines since joining the show in 2006.

Away from the cameras, Isabel announced in August that she and her husband, Adam Whitehead, were expecting their first child, just a few months after they tied the knot. The couple got married in April at a dreamy ceremony held at Castlefield Rooms in Manchester city centre. Their relationship continues to flourish, with Isabel sharing the news of her pregnancy in August.

On Instagram, the popular soap star posted a picture of herself and Adam holding the scan image, captioning it: “First comes love, Then comes marriage, Then comes… Baby Whitehead.”

This week, Isabel received an outpouring of support from fans as she celebrated a wedding milestone during a romantic getaway.

On her Instagram, Isabel shared a series of charming photos from their retreat to Carden Park in Cheshire. She wrote, “Celebrating 6 months married and being 24 weeks pregnant. The dreamiest little pre-baby getaway @cardenpark.”

She continued, ” Lovely pampering with a pregnancy massage and facial, followed by a delicious afternoon tea. I feel so relaxed and grateful for such a special stay.”

Isabel’s followers and Emmerdale colleagues were swift to flood the post with affection.

Danny Miller, who portrays Aaron Dingle in the soap, remarked: “Very cute.”

Meanwhile, a fan wrote: “A lovely couple and soon a lovely family.”

Another follower added: “Glad all going well for you, can’t believe it’s been 6 months already sounds lovely and had a brilliant time to relax. Can’t wait for you to be a family of 3 bless you.”

This follows Isabel’s suggestion that she might step away from Emmerdale to concentrate on being a mother.

Speaking about this choice, the ITV actress told The Mirror in August: “I will miss it. I love the people there, but I’ve worked there for 19 years, so I feel like I’ve done what I’ve wanted to do and been selfish with my career. Isabel continued: “Now, it’s time to devote my life to being a mum, that feels right to me. But there’s still FaceTime, so they won’t forget me!”

SH0CK: Diane Keaton’s ex Woody Allen ISSUES Heartbreaking Statement after her Tragic D3ATH

    Russia Ukraine Woody Allen (25237681764792)

Woody Allen has finally released a statement following the d3ath of his rumoured ex-girlfriend and frequent collaborator Diane Keaton, following her d3ath at the age of 79 on Saturday (October 11). It has been claimed that the pair “remained friends” after they first crossed paths in the late 1960s, which reportedly led to a romantic relationship. Now, the controversial 89-year-old filmmaker has shared a touching essay about the star as he mourned her loss.

In the essay published by The Free Press on Sunday (October 12), he wrote: “It’s grammatically incorrect to say ‘most unique’, but all rules of grammar, and I guess anything else, are suspended when talking about Diane Keaton. Unlike anyone the planet has experienced or is unlikely to ever see again, her face and laugh illuminated any space she entered.”

AFI Life Achievement Award Gala, Show, Los Angeles, USA - 08 Jun 2017

Allen and Keaton first met in 1969 when she auditioned for a role in his Broadway production of Play It Again, Sam. She eventually landed a role in the stage production and received a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play.

He continued, “If she was less than enthusiastic, I tried to use her criticism to reedit and come away with something she felt better about.” The Oscar-winning actress worked on several films with the director, including the 1977 movie Annie Hall, which earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress.

Allen added: “A few days ago, the world was a place that included Diane Keaton. Now it’s a world that does not. Hence, it’s a drearier world. Still, there are her movies. And her great laugh still echoes in my head.”

Keaton has a complex relationship with her close pal and rumoured ex over the years leading up to her passing. News of her d3ath in California broke on Saturday with the Los Angeles Fire Department responding to a medical call at the late star’s home at 8:08am, according to TMZ.

    Woody Allen and Diane Keaton

An individual had been transported to a hospital by ambulance, with sources later confirming that it had been Keaton. When the news broke, Allen was said to be “extremely distraught and surprised and upset” over the shocking news, an insider told People.

The two stars often worked together, with the late actress appearing in eight of his movies throughout her career. In 1977, Keaton took on the leading role alongside Allen in his film Annie Hall, which is believed to have been based on their past romantic relationship.

Keaton later refuted these claims, telling the New York Times: “It’s not true, but there are elements of truth in it.” The pair are believed to have dated before Annie Hall and lived together in a penthouse that offered a view of Central Park in the Big Apple.

In her 2011 memoir, Keaton reflected on their relationship, writing: “We shared a love of torturing each other with our failures. He could sling out the insults, and so could I… His insights into my character were d3ad-on – duh! – hilarious. I had him pegged as a cockroach you couldn’t kill.”

Elsewhere in the book, she also penned: “I miss Woody. He’d cringe if he knew how much I care about him, but I’m smart enough not to broach the subject. I know he’s borderline repulsed by the grotesque nature of my affection. What am I supposed to do? I still love him.” Despite their romantic relationship coming to an end, their close friendship did not.

However, in the past few years Fern has been dealt some tragic heartbreak, including the death of both of her parents and her split from husband Phil Vickery.

And, speaking in 2024, Fern candidly opened up about “being in a dark place” following the heartbreaking ordeals she has endured.

Fern Britton on tragic back-to-back losses

It’s fair to say TV presenter Fern – who now lives at the Cornish seaside – has had a difficult past few years. In 2018, her mother died and, at the end of 2019, Fern’s dad died. Then, in 2020, Fern announced she had split from TV chef husband Phil Vickery after 20 years.

The heartbreaking back-to-back losses had a huge effect on Fern – who resorted to picking up bad habits, including smoking that left her “not breathing well”.

“My mum died, and a year later, my father died, and the next year, my marriage died. I fell into this era of indolence I call it, where I just started just lying in bed later and later and later,” Fern said at the Cheltenham Literary Festival in October 2024.

Fern reveals she ‘was not breathing well’

The TV star went on: “And then really, what was the purpose of getting up and getting dressed or getting showered or cleaning my teeth because I will soon be back in bed.

“Why don’t I start smoking? Yes. Drinking. Yes, eating yes, the whole thing. And then it took me about a year to realise that I put a lot of weight on, that I was not breathing well.”

Fern went on to share that she was “in a very bad place” but “gradually” she managed “to pull myself out of it”.

    What else could possibly happen?

Meanwhile in June 2025, talking to the Telegraph, Fern also reflected on the blows she faced over five years ago.

She said: “My mum died in 2018 and my dad died in 2019. And then my marriage died. Next, I discovered that my phone had been hacked for 15 years [by News of the World]. And last year a man who was stalking me for several years went to court and was given a restraining order.

“For a while, I was wondering what else could possibly happen. But lots of women endure difficult stuff. And we just live with it and keep going.”
