BBC Radio Wales weather star Derek Brockway is leaving his role after three decades at the broadcaster. The meteorologist first presented his first BBC Wales Today forecast in 1997 and went on to front the TV series Weatherman Walking for nearly 20 years.
Taking to X on Tuesday, Derek announced he had big news share with his 91,000 followers. He began: Shwmae [hello] everyone. I have some BIG news to share! After nearly 30 years of presenting the weather on @BBCWales will be leaving at the end of the year. What a great run I’ve had. It’s been a privilege and a pleasure.”
He accompanied the post with a lengthy message as the weather star told viewers: “After nearly 30 wonderful years presenting the weather for BBC Wales, I would like to let you know that I’ll be leaving at Christmas and starting a new chapter in my life. It’s a decision I’ve thought long and hard about, and it certainly hasn’t been an easy one.”
Derek went on to share that his fascination with the weather began during a long hit summer in 1976 when he was just eight years old.
He continued: “In 1986, I joined the Met Office, achieving a lifelong ambition. My career path took me to Birmingham, Bracknell, London and even the Falkland Islands, before eventually bringing me back home to Wales, where I joined BBC Wales in September 1997. And what a journey it’s been.
For nearly three decades, I’ve had the great privilege of being welcomed into your homes and sharing weather updates with you across Wales. Along the way, I’ve been fortunate to enjoy some incredible adventures, especially through ‘Weatherman Walking’.”

Derek went on to thank his friends, colleagues and the “wonderful people” he has met over the years.
He concluded: “So, as I begin my final few months with BBC Wales, I simply want to say thank you – for your kindness, your support, and for making me feel part of your lives for almost 30 years. It’s been a genuine privilege.”
