Celebrity Gogglebox’s Shaun Ryder was left shouting: “No, it’s not,” at his co-star, fellow Happy Mondays bandmate, Bez, during Friday’s (June 3) episode of the hit Channel 4 series. The iconic duo reunited on screens to be sofa experts for the star-studded spin-off of Gogglebox, among the likes of Nick Grimshaw, Chris Packham, Denise Van Outen and Eddie Kadi. In addition to watching Graham Norton interview Madonna and an episode of Clarkson’s Farm, the musicians shared a hilarious nod to their drug-fuelled rock and roll days.
Shaun and Bez say, comfortably, as sofa experts, watching Ambulance: Code Red, a TV series that follows real paramedics as they face real emergencies. During the episode, the medics arrived at a wedding where a drunk guest had fallen and broken his ankle. After the patient was told he would be receiving ketamine, Bez joked: “We know this drug, it’s alright, he’s going to be happy”, prompting a shocked Shaun to shout: “It’s not alright.”

Bez laughed as he mocked: “‘It’s not alright,'” the musician continued to chuckle as he shouted: “Why are you giving him ketamine, are you f******g mad?”
Shaun remarked: “I don’t like ketamine,” while his co-star pointed out: “He’s going to be off his head.”
Both TV stars have been open about their previous drug use from the height of their “Madchester” music scene during the 1990s and their journey with sobriety.

Bez, who was born Mark Berry, previously said: “I’ve always been really fortunate, because even though I’ve been on some of these same journeys too, I genuinely don’t believe that I’ve ever had an addiction. I’ve always been able to walk away from anything like that, whenever I wanted to.”

In his memoir, Buzzin’: The Nine Lives of a Happy Monday, he added: “For me, with heroin, it’s often been more about the experience of having done it than actually doing it, if you know what I mean. Even though I obviously enjoy the party vibe and getting off my head, on Monday morning I’m quite happy to go back to normality.”

Meanwhile, Bez wrote that “Shaun was at d3ath’s door.”
He penned: “Shaun was at d3ath’s door. He bought into that whole package, the tortured-artist genius thing, and he’d gone down that path as far as you can go, before the Reaper starts taking an interest.”
The 63-year-old used a notorious cocktail of heroin, crack cocaine and meth, but he successfully kicked his addictions after turning 40.
In a 2024 interview with The Sun, Shaun admitted: “I used to be addicted to heroin, methamphetamine, crack cocaine, you name it. Now I’m addicted to cycling and Coronation Street.
