Rather than allowing the rumours to continue, the Palace has drawn what appears to be a very firm line: Harry and Meghan may remain members of the King’s family, but they are not returning as working royals.
The timing is particularly striking.
Their return to Britain had prompted intense speculation over what the Sussexes actually wanted from the monarchy. Could Harry rebuild his relationship with his father? Could Meghan eventually become involved in selected royal engagements? Or could the couple find some kind of compromise between their independent lives and Harry’s royal heritage?
According to royal commentator Richard Myers, however, recent developments suggest those questions may have been answered.

Writing for the Mirror, Myers pointed to the uncertainty surrounding the Sussexes’ return and questioned whether Harry genuinely knows how to achieve the complete reconciliation he is believed to want.
“The Sussexes’ return to Britain has brought more questions than answers,” Myers wrote, highlighting the central issue of what Harry and Meghan actually want from their relationship with the Royal Family.
He questioned whether Harry truly wants a complete reconciliation and whether he would even know how to make that happen.
The commentator suggested that the events of recent weeks have provided an increasingly revealing answer.

According to Myers, the King’s decision to communicate through the Lord Chamberlain represented a deliberate attempt to take control of the narrative.
He argued that Charles had effectively “extinguished any hope” the Sussexes might have had of returning to the royal fold.
The letter, sent to local authorities and others who may seek to engage with Harry and Meghan, was described by Myers as leaving little room for interpretation.
“They aren’t coming back and they don’t represent The Firm,” he said.
That distinction is crucial.
Harry remains the son of the King and a member of the Royal Family by birth. His children remain grandchildren of the monarch.
But being part of the family does not mean representing the Crown.
The Palace now appears determined to make sure those two roles are not confused.
Sussex reaction adds another twist
Yet rather than quietly accepting the clarification, Team Sussex has reportedly expressed frustration over how the announcement was handled.
The couple were said to be “surprised” that they had not been given advance notice of the letter’s contents.
For Myers, the response immediately recalled previous confrontations between the Sussexes and the Palace.
He suggested that Team Sussex had once again turned to what he described as the familiar strategy of expressing outrage after a royal decision becomes public.
“The letter goes public, the Sussexes relay their dismay, they were ‘surprised’ at the lack of respect,” Myers wrote.
The observation adds another layer to an already complicated situation.
Is the Sussex comeback really over?
The latest development does not necessarily mean Harry’s personal relationship with Charles cannot improve.
The King can still meet his son privately, maintain contact with his grandchildren and attempt to repair a relationship damaged by years of tension.
But a family reconciliation is very different from a royal comeback.
That may be the distinction Charles is now determined to enforce.
Harry could return to Britain.
He could support charities.
He could attend private family occasions.
But if the King’s message is taken at face value, the door to becoming a working royal again appears firmly closed.
And after years of speculation about a possible Sussex comeback, the Palace’s latest intervention may have delivered its most brutal answer yet: Harry and Meghan can come home as family — but not as representatives of the Crown.
