Dolly Parton has d!ed at the age of 80, bringing to a close the extraordinary life of one of country music’s most influential and instantly recognisable stars.
The news was announced Tuesday by her nephew Bryan Seaver in a video posted to Parton’s official Instagram account. Speaking for the Parton and Owens family, he revealed that the singer had personally asked him years earlier to deliver the announcement when the time came.
“My name is Bryan Seaver, son of Cassie Parton, and I’m representing the Parton and Owens family today announcing the passing of my aunt, Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean,” he told followers.
He remembered her not only as Dolly, but as “Sister, Sis and Granny to one generation and Gigi to the next.”

A final request made years earlier
Seaver, the son of Dolly’s sister Cassie Parton, served as his aunt’s head of security for more than two decades. He said the responsibility of delivering her final message carried both enormous pride and profound sadness.
“This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago, before I fully absorbed it as a future reality,” he explained.
Paying tribute to Dolly’s Christian faith, Seaver said the family’s sorrow was for those she had left behind rather than for the singer herself.
“Sadness lies with us, not with Dolly,” he said, adding that the country legend was now “in the arms of Jesus” and would surely have been reunited with her late husband, Carl Dean, her parents and others who had gone before her.
The announcement followed months of concern about Dolly’s health. She had withdrawn from several engagements and cancelled planned performances after telling fans she needed to undergo a number of medical procedures.
Just four days before the family announced her passing, Dolly spoke openly about health problems she admitted she had previously neglected while caring for Carl.
She also reflected on an earlier difficult period during the 1980s, when health issues kept her out of action for several months.

A painful final chapter
Concern had already intensified in October 2025 when Dolly’s sister Frieda publicly asked people to pray for her. The singer had also missed an event at Dollywood after experiencing problems caused by a kidney stone.
Her health struggles came during an emotionally painful chapter. Carl, her husband of nearly 60 years, d!ed aged 82 in 2025. Dolly later honoured him through the deeply personal song If You Hadn’t Been There.
Despite those setbacks, she continued working and making music during her later years. In 2025, she collaborated with Sabrina Carpenter on a new version of Please Please Please.
Dolly’s career stretched across more than 65 years, beginning when she performed on local radio and television as a child in Tennessee. She recorded her first single, Puppy Love, at just 11 years old before signing with Monument Records at 19.
Her debut album, Hello, I’m Dolly, marked the beginning of a remarkable rise that would take her far beyond country music.
Jolene turned her into an international star, while Coat of Many Colors and I Will Always Love You became enduring classics. Her 1980 crossover hit 9 to 5 earned two Grammy Awards, and she appeared in the movie of the same name alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.
Other major recordings included Islands in the Stream and Here You Come Again.
Away from the recording studio, Dolly opened the Dollywood theme park in Tennessee in 1986. She was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Across her career, she collected 11 Grammy Awards and scored 26 number-one songs on Billboard’s country chart — leaving behind a musical legacy spanning generations.
